IT CAN BE DONE!!!

I've been playing CIV III PTW since day one and I don't know where these people are getting you have to play "conquer the world" to win the game. I've won several games by being the first in space (it does depend a lot on how you play the diplomacy game, if you say you are going to do something with a race and then stab them in the back, yes, you can expect war quite often because the AI is not forgiving and when you LIE once, thas all folks hehe). Oh sure you have your wars, but, you don't have to conquer anyone, just a couple of hits to their cities and usually they are ready to make peace. Then you just continue on until you create your spaceship and fly away from it all. I've had games where I sat right in the middle of two major powers, but, because of my diplomacy and SHARING, they never attacked me, cause I played nice ;) Conquests is no different, though I do wish the elements of Conquest were ALL added to the origional game, but, still if you like scenarios, you will like Conquests. Let's face it if you are CIV fan, this is just another one of those MUST HAVE's. And remember if you want a good non-conquer game, learn how to play diplomacy. ;) There's a game within this game, you just have to figure out how it works, those that can't seem to win by any other means that conquer, just don't know how to play. ;)

So far it's great!

I'm a long-time fan of Civ, including Civ III, and I'm in the beta test program for this expansion pack. While I'm not allowed to say anything specific about the game, I think it's safe for me to say that I can't wait to have a copy of the final version. Civ Conquests does everything right to make some bite-sized chunks of Civ -- now I find myself playing the scenarios all the time instead of the main game, just because I can finish them faster. If you've ever played and liked Civ III, there's absolutely no reason not to pick this up.

If You Love CIVIII You MUST Have This Expansion

The Conquests expansion for CIV3 combines all of the features of the unfairly maligned PtW expansion as well as a whole new set of wonders and features specific to this package. The look and feel of the game with the Conquests disk is about the same as the original CIV3, however, there are so many subtle enhancements in the expansion that it would be impossible for me to move backwords and still enjoy the game. I have read reviews saying that the expansion is buggy, but I have had NO problems at all and haven't needed a patch to have hours of fun.

PROS...
*Upgraded AI for a more challenging computer opponent
*New civilizations! Sumerians, Byzantines, Maya, Portugal and many more along with the new cultural proficiences (seafaring and agrigultural) add a new dimension to the playing experience.
*More units! The TOW Infantry and Mobile SAM are awesome. Upgraded bombardment means a strong air forice and cruise missiles function much better.
*Sugar, Tobaco, and Tropical Fruit have all been added as terrain bonuses.
*The new wonders are very good, especially the Statue of Zeus

CONS...
*Price...this is a lot of money for an expansion. $14.95 or $19.95 would be more reasonable.
*Some of the new functionality only works with the built in scenarios.
*The Temple of Artemis Wonder takes a long time to build and then expires shortly after it is built.

Bottom line? If you are a CIV3 fan then price isn't really and issue because we all know the value you can get from this product with limitless replays and hours of fun. If you like the game then how could you not add the new CIVs, Wonders and units? If you are new to CIV3 then I would wait until you play the game and see if it is for you before buying this expansion because it is a bit pricey.

awesome expansion for civ addicts

I have never regretted buying Conquests the day it came out, even though I see now I could have saved $20 by waiting. The seven included scenarios are incredible, and each requires new thinking -- in the Mesoamerican scenario, for example, you can settle on mountains, and your javelin throwers can "enslave" the enemy, converting a defeated warrior into a worker. There are new mines to build and treasures to transport in the Age of Discovery, and you win by building ancient wonders in the ancient Mesopotamian scenario. Some of these changes are in the epic game (new wonders, new civs), but most are specific to the Conquest scenarios. There are a couple of bugs but gameplay is incredibly addicting for anyone who already finds they spend too much time trying to build one more Immortal so the Persians can kill those pesky Hoplites and destroy Greece... again.

A great game but still room for improvement

I think Civilization III is a fantastic game and I especially love this expansion pack with all the new civilizations, new wonders, technologies and the two new forms of government.

One big improvement I find in Conquests over the original is that trade is better. the AI is more willing to trade their surplus fur/iron etc than in the original. that really bothered me about the original cause I remember one game when my neighouring AI civilization had a surplus of four fur and still wouldnt trade any with me. Another improvement I like is the option to make the AI civilizations more aggressive. This is good as I have played one game in the original civ3 on Monarch level which I completed without a single war occuring in the whole history of the game. That's just not realistic. thankfully now u can make all the AI more aggressive which is good. also conquests allows new civs to be created when one is destroyed which is good.

However I think there are still faults in the game that I'm sure will probably be rectified in Civ4. The latter part of the game is very slow and can get annoying especially when pollution keeps occuring on every go and u have to keep sending your workers to a new pollution spot to clean it up. Fortunately civ4 has promised to eradicate this. another major problem is the military side of the game. the "stack of doom" tactics that u use to defeat an enemy is simply not realistic. fortunately again civ4 has promised to correct this problem also. the final fault i can find with civ3 in general is the way every civ starts at the same year 4000BC. i think it would be nice if u had maybe only 3 or 4 civilizations starting the game and then a few more randomly start up over the next few thousand years. also it would be cool if factions of your civilization broke off or rebelled to become independent civilizations later in the game especially if they were located on a seperate island or continent from your mainland.

to sum up i say buy conquests if u already own civ3 (its only $14.99). if not i think ur probably better off not get addicted to the game at this stage and simply wait for civ4 to come. that promises to be a much better game to get addicted to.

This is THE expansion of Civ 3

I am really glad I've gotten Conquers. This is the real expansion for Civilization 3 and not Play the World (which is also included in the CD by the way).

It has many new nations, like Mayas or Incas, new Wonders of the World (now the whole 7 wonders, like Zeus statue, are in), new cultural types (seafaring and agricultural), new units and many other things.

Remember that you need to have previously installed Civ 3 before playing the game.

Overall, if you are a fan of Civilization game series, this is a piece of collection you should not miss.

The conquests are great fun

I think the conquests added to the game make it much better than the original. These are more than just extra scenarios. They have very different victory conditions and totally renamed and reworked civs to comply with the conquest conditions. Very fun. A great addition in my book. Especially if you don't have time to play out an entire 6000 year game.

Don't buy Play the World!!!!

This expansion to the CIV3 world is 'okay'. I say 'okay' because in essence it is the Play the World add-on with a few extras and scenarios. I don't like paying for scenarios. There are entirely too many available online for free, some even better than those being sold in this package to justify the 30 dollar price tag. (I am incredibly grateful to Amazon for selling this mess to me on sale for $9.99) I've been duped by firaxis 3 times now. First I got the collector's edition tin, which was supposed to have all these great goodies, and in essence had a cd of sid meier saying how great he is. I then bought Play-the-World and for the price, was REALLY disappointed with the product. I had to download 3 patches for it. Finally I get this, and even though I got it cheap, I STILL feel ripped off. Firaxis knows that civ fans are devoted, but they don't even justify multiplayer experiences like Blizzard does with Battle.Net. ::sigh:: Its a shame this product has been marketed this way. Had this been offered instead of Play-the-World, adding both multiplayer and the combined civs/units/wonders, I would have bumped this rating to 4 stars. Shame on Sid M. for letting Firaxis run amok with the franchise. I miss Microprose.

I love this expansion pack

The new civilizations alone make this worth the price in my mind but add in all the new governments, the new civilization characteristics are all great too.

But the new and improved Espionage interface it is worth its weight in gold.

The advisor window for cities can now be sorted by any column including what the city is producing is great. And last but not least the Histograph is replaced by a much better interface as well.

If you love the game the way I do you will love this expansion.

Conquering Civ3

While maintaining the majority of the original Civilization 3 game, Civilization 3: Conquests adds new civilizations for you to chose from, new wonders to build, new improvements and terrain, and conquests and much more (250 additions by Atari/Firaxis' count). Additionally, if you've never purchased the "Play the World" expansion it's included in this latest pack.

If you were to look at the laundry list of new items in the game you might say to yourself "oh, same old, same old," which, and I'll be perfectly honest here, is quite true. The game play is almost the same as the original Civ 3 title, yet the subtle changes to the game keeps the game much more interesting to play. You're given more options in how you would like to develop your civilization and new strategies to explore.

While I've had a tremendous amount of fun playing Civilizations 3: Conquests, I can't help but which Firaxis took the genre even further with more detailed country controls and details that would really bring about more of a simulation feel to the series. Regardless, Civilization 3: Conquests is quite worthy of the money spent on the purchase, and if you're a fan of the Civilization series, I highly recommend it.
