If you like Prince of Persia, have the hardware to run this and have a compatible gamepad, you won't be disappointed. I was afraid that my Athlon XP 1700 / GeForce FX5600 would be on the low end, but to my suprise it runs beatifully. This is one of about half a dozen games that I own for my PC and well worth the $$$.
As others have mentioned, the mouse/keyboard controls really are clunky, and if you are really going to enjoy the game you should get a gamepad. I went out and bought the Thrustmaster Firestorm Analog 3, which has up'd my rating to a solid 5/5.
This is only the second review that I have ever written on a product at Amazon. I was concerned after reading some bad reviews that I had just blown $35 on a throw-away. So I thought it would be helpful to add my 2 cents for any others out there like me. This is a great game!
I had to play it twice!

Prince of Persia Sands of Time totally ROCKS!!! Excellent storyline, excellent graphics, excellent sound, and although there are a few dissenters out there, I really like the controls. The key to playing this game successfully is to map the controls to your own particular style and to master the fighting techniques. Initially it may seem difficult to control because of the change in view during gameplay. I was able in most cases to control this with a trackball and by switching directional keys as the views changed. I really like what the programmers and designers did because it's like playing an interactive movie which is a lot of fun. It is true that for the most part you have to follow a certain path in order to complete the game but the puzzles are fun and so are the mazes. The first time through it took me 16 hours. I had so much fun I played again and practiced my fighting techniques. The result is that I was able to finish the game in six hours the second time. I've never played the same game twice in the same week but I had so much fun I just had to. I wish the programmers for the Tomb Raider series could do what Ubisoft has done with the controls. Granted it's a little different than normal but nowhere near as irritating is the Tomb Raider series especially Angel of Darkness. Well, happy gaming and have fun! I can't wait till next Prince of Persia comes out!
Do you have what it takes to master the sands of time?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, is a very fun game. My only gripe is that once you finish it you just don't get as much fun out of it. But besides that this is a very fun game. You start off as the prince [his name is never revealed] who is part of an army attacking a city in India. The Persians are victorious and they return home. But before they leave the prince finds a mysterious dagger, which has the power to turn back time. Afterwards the treacherous vizier of the Indians tricks the prince into opening the hourglass, which holds the sands of time, which turn any living thing that comes into contact with it into a "sand zombie" which is a monstrous undead creature made of sand [I'm not kidding about that last part] whose only instinct is to hunt down and kill anything living thing. Then you battle a group of sand zombies, after you defeat them you embark on an adventure to bottle up the sands of time. You start off on your own, but you soon team up with Farah, the princess of that city in India you conquered. She will automatically assist you should you require her assistance, some of these occasions include where she has to slip through a crack to open a certain door for you. She can also use her bow to aid you in battle. Just make sure you're not in her way when she fires. Speaking of combat, here's a few tips.
When you're fighting a single enemy, just keep attacking, that should take care of them. But watch out for their counter attacks! Those really pack a wallop.
When you're fighting multiple enemies, try hitting one of them a few times, then move on to the next, and the next, etc. And if you get crowded, try vaulting over one of them. Enemies too advanced for that trick? No problem, just back up against a wall, pillar, or even a chair or a table will do, and press spacebar twice while backing up against the object to do a more advanced vault attack on the enemy. This move will work on anyone!
And then there's the Prince's acrobatic skills. Nobody's better then the Prince in gymnastics! I mean, he can run across walls!
As you progress through the game, you will find that much of the game depends on the Prince's acrobatic abilities. You will constantly find yourself in situations where you must run across a ledge that collapses under you, run along the wall to do it again, and so on. Or you may have to ricochet up to walls to reach the top.
Also, when you're fighting enemies, remember that simply knocking them down won't work, you have to stab them in the back to finish them.
And then there's that unusual but delightful twist. The dagger allows you to turn back time, so let's say you got impaled on a spike, you can turn back time to make sure that never happened!
Just remember, in this game, reflexes and speed rule the day. So there is only one rule, master the sands, or be buried.
Excellent Game...

The most recent incarnation of the Prince of Persia series is kicked off with our introduction to an enjoyable gameplay mechanic. The ability to reverse time. Sands of Time and its sequels integrate this concept into puzzles and battles fluidly and 'believably' ultimately making for an excellent gameplay experience.
The storyline is one that I personally enjoyed, but I can see where some may be deterred by it. The Prince is a bit whiny and self-righteous at times, but that's part of what I enjoyed about him. If you've never tried these games, start here and work your way through its sequels. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Disappointing

While this game might be killer on other platforms, like xbox, for the PC this game was highly disappointing. I have followed the "Prince of Persia" games since its first release (for DOS) and have been a big fan, so I do not say this without some thought.
Good: great graphics, good storyline (overall), good music
Bad: 1) movement is more than awkward - it's just plain bad, and changing the point of view with the mouse does not respond as most of today's games do (rather strange in fact); 2) there are too many movies - about one every 30 seconds; 3) this is not a "virtual world", the character is guided which way to go and deviation from this path merely stops the game until you get back on the desired route; 4) there is no way to know what my immediate goal is except for written prompts displayed on the screen - do this, do that (but why am I doing that??) - since the game is telling me what to do, and guiding me along my route, this makes for a boring game; 5) During sword fights the character's movements can be totally unpredictable - although it looks great, and my guy is doing flips and jumps all over the place, all I did was press the spacebar -- ? Can I repeat this action at will? No.
The bottom line is it is an awkward and stupid game, embellished by some truly great graphics and sound.
I had high hopes for this game but am very disappointed. If you are buying for the PC, save your money.
Not very fun, and not very original

Karateka and Prince of Persia were the two games I grew up on. More than any other arcade-style games, I can vividly remember these two games and how much fun they were. This is one of the reasons I was so disapointed with "Sands of Time."
I was really impressed wiht this game when I first played it. Except it was called "Tomb Raider" bck then. And that's all this is, Tomb Raider with a slight face lift. The storyline is basically the same: run around ancient places doing flips and sommersaults, and avoiding trips. That's EXACTLY what you do in Prince of Persia. The only difference is that youfight more NPCs. This actually detracts from PoP because the combat system is so weak. Gameplay on the PC is very awkward and difficult. Instead of space bar causing you to jump, it causes you to sommersault. For anyone with experience playing FPS or basically ANY game, the space bar should be reserved for jumping. But as I said, the combat is very weak. You can't run from monsters, and you can't really do many special attacks. Besides what the game may say, most of the attacks are the same, they just look different. I dreadedthe combat system because it was so boring. I just hit random keys until the guys died.
Special save points. UNlike Tomb Raider, this game has pre-set save points, which means you're pretty much forced to get to a certain area before you quit, or you lose everything you did. Some may like this feature, I found it annoying. If the game had been challenging AND fun I wouldnt have minded it, but having to redo everything was just a pain.
Lastly, the absolute worst thing about this game is the movement. Unlikle other games, the moue does not control your character, it controls the camera angle. This makes for some VERY disorienting game play. Long-time gamers will have a lot to get used to if they pick up this game. What's more, many times I found myself thrown into angles thta made it almost impossible to play or see where I was going. Several times the camera would go into a wall and no amount of moving the mouse would get a better shot. I just had to restart. That is the main reason this game is inferior to Tomb Raider. While this game might work on the PS2, it ports over to PC very poorly.
If you have never played Tomb Raider, you may find "Sands of Time" exciting. But considering when it came out, it should have had much better graphics, an easier skill set, and a better storyline. I'll have more fun playing the original Prince of Persia rom than this.
AWESOME and MIND-BLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!Just finished the game :)

I must say that I have been playing games since the time the first prince of persia came out.... The SANDS OF TIME is, by far, the best single-player game I have played till date.
The game follows a routine of playing and solving a few puzzles and some fighting (never gets boring though), followed by a rewarding movie or an event occuring which tempts you to go further and further. And you will totally be engrossed as you take the role of the prince and see how he waivers from trust-love-distrust towards the princess. It truly is a must-play to experience this...
The graphics and sound truly are awesome. Eye-popping colors, sounds, music and visuals. Kudos to the POP team who made the game.
The ending of the game is really good too...and makes you wanting more...I just can't wait for POP2 to come out. I wish this game was longer too (its not short...its just that I didn't notice how time flew by!)
All I want to say is that its an experience rather than a game (m serious :D). Buy the game..worth every penny...play the game...worth every second...!!! MIND-BLOWING :)
Very nice game worth picking up a Copy!

OK, when i first started playing this game i noticed how nice
the graphics are, probally the best a game has to offer these
days, and i also noticed how weird the controls were via
keyboard/mouse. I soon picked up on the controls in only about
30min and for all the moves and fighting techniques only about
1hr. The game has a wonderful story that anyone new or old to
the prince of persia series can follow on very easily. This game
and its story is very addicting and it will make you play hours
and hours on end tell you finally beat it, you may think the
game is short but thats only because you cant stop playing it. I
suggest that you play this on medium to hard difficulty level
the first time around so you get a long and challenging
experience. Fighting in this game at first is pretty easy but
later on in the game the monsters just keep coming like a swarm
of locust you kill 3 only to have 10 more pop out, which makes
it pretty difficult which is a good thing that i liked very
much. The combat is also similar to the Matrix games running and
jumping off walls floating into the air to swip your foes from
behind its really neat you just have a sword instead of guns =)
If your having trouble with the controls they do suggest a
gamepad to purchase called the Thrustmaster (Firestorm) Analog
3, but you can learn the keyboard and mouse with some patience.
One more thing to note about the (Camera angles) in Prince of
Persia is that they are not near as bad as the Resident evil or
Silent hill games so dont let that factor stop you from
purchasing this game. !!!Almost forgot about the puzzles!!!!
They are challenging and never boring not to hard not to easy
kinda similar to Tomb Radier but better.
Pros:
1. Very nice and clean Graphics Top of the line
2. Story line easy to follow and keeps you playing
3. Combat is like the Matrix Games with swords instead of guns
4. The puzzles are a challenge and make you think
Cons:
1. Your gonna need a good computer and with video requirments that match the box
2. The controls and camera angles may be to difficult for some people to learn or get the hang of
3. Not much replay value after beating it on all difficulty levels
Still sweet after 4 years

I had this game for the Gamecube but never got the rest of the series. Now that I can't play the GC version I just decided to pick up the entire series from square one for the PC. (I figured it would just look that much better, and it seems to if memory serves me.)
The game is simply awesome all around. I won't get into to much detail but, if you like action/adventure this is a must buy.
Now, as far as the keyboard and mouse controls go, I don't think they are as bad as some claim. I admit I can see where it can be frustrating. You just don't have the same reaction/precision as playing it with an analog pad. Fighting multiple enemies while camera is rotating isn't exactly intuitive on the keyboard. Also jumping at angles can be a problem.
That said, I would play this with an analog pad, and do. :D
For the record I use my Xbox 360 pad with the game. It's functional "out the box" but I re calibrated the pad just to have things perfect.
Again the pad works just fine without doing anything to it, but to play Prince with it you might want to re calibrate it.
Hope this helps. Happy gaming.
