Hope you think and move as fast as a computer!

...because this game has three speeds... playable, fast, and insane. Even my husband, who is normally the game guru, says this game is hard. The instructions don't help much in explaining the strategy behind the game, but they do include a "training demo." I'd suggest you watch the demo at least twice, because there's a lot to this game. Also, hone your skills on the "easy" Arcade mode or play against a friend before trying to tackle any of the other modes. I didn't find it as addicting as other people said... I found it more confusing than anything. Just when you think you're doing great, suddenly you're dead because the computer did something that you missed since you didn't have time to watch what it was doing!

Since I don't know anyone else my age (I plead the fifth!) who owns a GBA and can't try it in game link mode, I fear that this game will be the one with the shortest history in my game collection -- 4 hours. Oh, well... off to the local game store to see how many pennies I'll get for turning it in as a "used game."

Not As I Remembered

This game is just a glorified Tetris. Not as much fun as I remember and quite boring. Thank goodness for SIMS.

A fine game

Granted, it's a tough call between "Super Puzzle Fighter II" and its predecessor's GBA incarnation, "Puyo Pop." But I'll take Chun Li kicking at Ryu while I hurry to connect color-coded gems any day of the week. The sound is terrific, the graphics are blocky but gorgeous, and the gameplay is out of this world. Two cartridge "versus" mode is outlandish fun. Seeing little gems crash and explode somehow gives me such a sense of satisfaction, even when I'm losing.

totaly awesome game my fav!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have never tried this game, I suggest you do. It is really fun, challenging, and funny. It takes a mix of Street Fighter & Darkstalkers characters, and makes them Super Deformed & super cute. If you like Street Fighter & Bejewelled, you will LOVE this game. For a real challenge, try to beat it using the hidden character Dan.

The object of this game is to KO your opponent. However you don't fight them, you clear a puzzle game board that is similar to Tetris. There is a difference though, in order to clear blocks you use "Power balls" of the matching color to another block, doing so causes a certain patern of blocks to fall on your opponent's side. Each character has a certain patern of the colors that fall, Dan, for example is nothing but red blocks. If you stack 4 or more of the same color together, you get a super block, which if it is cleared causes lots of blocks to fall on your opponent. Every 25 blocks you drop, you get a "super gem" this gem will clear all blocks of one color, and can cause major chain-reaction combos. The more combos/blocks the more damage. The maximum damage any combo/block attack can do is 99 blocks.

I love puzzle games. If there's any one genre I like above all, it'd have to be the puzzle genre. Sure, there's a lot of bad ones out there that never get anywhere, but so many of them stand the test of time, and are still played today. Tetris, Bust-a-Move, Tetris Attack, Chu Chu Rocket, Puyo Pop, and even It's Mr. Pants are all played by many, and continue with new releases that people still buy. Who knew that a game with a bunch of blocks falling around would go on to be the best selling game of all time? But in comes the new kid on the block: Puzzle Fighter. While it's a port of the PSone version, it's still fun and addictive. It does have a minor problem that would have me reduce the score to 4.5 stars if I could, but it's just so damn fun that I can't resist the 5 star rating.

Super Puzzle Fighter II is essentially Puyo Pop and Tetris Attack combined, but with Street Fighter characters thrown in for added charm. 2-tile blocks of color fall down, and you create huge gems out of them, only to eradicate them with a shining block of a certain color. Example- you make a big blue gem...and the next piece to fall down is a regular green/shining blue piece. Have the shining blue piece hit the big blue gem, and it disappears. Continue doing this, and use strategy to destroy multiple ones at the same time to chain combos together, defeating your opponent. Yeah, it sounds a little silly, and it kind of is. But you don't notice it while playing because your eyes are glued to the screen, not blinking, trying your best to not lose. And while it sounds easy, the CPU is pretty tough, even on the easy difficulty with the difficulty stars on the option menu toned all the way down. That CPU uses strategy I tell ya. Something some people I've played against in previous puzzle games never used. The main mode of the game is the Arcade Mode. It's the basic mode we all know from any puzzle game. Go through the game and beat all the characters, and even a secret boss one at the end, not immediately selectable from the beginning. It starts out very easily, but then the computer kicks in with that strategy I was talking about. Like having all the blocks on one side of the box, and letting them just stack up so they have pleanty of room to make huge gems. Expect to lose a lot when they do this. You'll just have to be quicker on the draw. There's also a Versus Mode, which I haven't really played since no one else around here has a GBA or doesn't like puzzle games. But from what I've read, it's the same as Arcade, only against another person...'kinda obvious there. Lastly is the Street Puzzle Mode. Here you can win some cool prizes for beating very tough 1-match rounds. Things you get include different colors for the characters, new win poses, music collections, voice collections, illustrations (very low-resolution though), and collections of animations. It's worth the effort to get all of these. Also, you can get the codes for the secret characters, including Akuma. He's even more menacing in chibi-ized form than he is normal.

So what's the minor problem? Now that I think about it, there's two, one being much smaller than the other. I'll get that one out of the way first, and it's an obvious one- the sound isn't the best. Voices sound good for a cart-based system and all, but they get fuzzy from time to time, as does the soundtrack. I'm not really complaining, and it doesn't take away from the gameplay...but they could've touched it up slighly better. The bigger problem is that black screen of death, as it's called by some. This has only happened once to me, but while playing, the screen will go black...and nothing happens. Pressing buttons won't make it go away, and you'll have to turn the game off/on again. Because of this, I don't play for too long at a time (a half hour tops) for fear of losing all my prizes that I fought for in the Street Puzzle mode.

The graphics are pretty good, and look identical to the PSone version, save the low-resolution illustration collection. Animations are great, and there's a lot of detail in the characters. I was actually impressed that they looked this good on the small GBA screen. Even the Capcom logo animation before you even get to the game's title screen looks great. It's from the PSone days where it'd show up all flashy. And as I mentioned above, the sound is alright. It could've been touched up more, but it gets the job done.

If you need a good puzzle game while on the go, or one to play against someone else on the GameBoy Player for GC, Puzzle Fighter II should be at the top of your list. It's one of few games I can think of that keep me coming back for more to outdo my previous ranks in the game. Here's hoping for a Third Strike version, and that they implament the characters even more for added chaos.

THIS IS GOING TO ROCK!

This game is the most addicting game ever created. Gets kind of boring in 1 player mode, but makes up for everything in multiplayer. This game is the most fun you will have with another person. I own the game for the PSX (Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo), This is just a port of that game. This is a must have for all Game Boy advance owners and the reason to buy the system, even If you are not a puzzle game fan. I would give this game 6 stars if i could. YOU MUST GET THIS GAME. You won't be disappointed.

Best puzzle game out today!!!!!!!!!

Puzzle games just don't get more frantic, addictive, or competitve than the jewel-matching, chain-planning, anxiety-producing, friendship-weakining (beileve me I should know) bliss
of SPF2T. If your not familiar with the PS1 cult classic, it works like this: Two players choose a character (big-head versions of SF and Darkstalkers characters) and proceed to "fight" by lining up colored gems and trying to set off elaborate chains that drop tons of unwanted gems in your opponents area. These "counter gems" have little digital timers that count down slowly before they can be cleared, which can be a pain or a pleasure... if you play your own gems right. The colorful graphics, Capcom-tight control, and just-fine sounds have been faithfully reproduced from the PS original, right down to the weird animated nonsense that goes on in the background as your fighters duke it out, though the GBA vesion struggles with slowdown near the end, which isn't a bad thing , really, since it gives you ample time to think. While it's definitely meant to be linked up and played as a 2-player game, the single player A.I. can be downright ingenous sometimes. SPF2T is a n addictive puzzler as it has ever been wrought, even if the marriage of Chun-Li and jewel-dropping doesn't make a lick of sense.

One of my most favorite games ever

No doubt about it, its a great game. I never have had any memory bugs as in the other reviews, I have completed all of the challenges, and they are still saved months later. The learning curve is pretty big, but once you learn it, its awesome. If ya wanna try the arcade one, get a CPS2 system emulator and download the rom (although I can't say I did this, I know it exists). Pay attention to the learning video, and always just work on combos, and don't break little blocks, and lay pieces very fast. I wish there was someone here at my university that played it, I could go on for hours playing this. For an added challenge, try to beat the game with Dan (something I did on hard mode last night), or unlock master mode and go at it on there (not the toughest thing in the world). Although, I do feel master mode w/ Dan will never happen over here.

Consider the technology involved

Loved it on the PS1, love it here. There are some reviews out there that knock the port for its lower quality music. I say consider the technology involved. Do you really think you can get CD quality music that spans over 500 MB on an original PS1 CD (still more than a cartridge can hold if the music is compressed) in a 5 to 30 MB cartridge? If you think you can without sacrificing sound quality or the quality of the game itself then yes, there is a Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny does poop out painted chicken eggs to celebrate the ressurrection of the Christ.

Other than that (heh) the game holds up on the portable format. If you wanted music then buy the soundtrack to the game. If you want one of the most addictive Tetris clones available, buy this. Yes, I too get skeptical when people make pronouncements like that, but in this case it's true. Yet another puzzle game to take with you on plane/train/car/bus trips.

One of the reviewers here is right though. In Street Puzzle mode the computer seems to be moving that much faster than you and there's no hope of winning unless you randomly set down pieces (because eventually their will be masses of colored blocks that will bust). But you can win.

BTW, don't trust Vijay Boyapati to give an honest review. I am not a Capcom shill as he says. I'm simply reviewing on the game's merits and he sees fit to attack the other reviewers simply because they don't agree with him (which really pisses me off). I haven't had the chance to try the two player mode but I find the rest of the game fun. Is it an exact port of the PSOne version? No! Gee, now I wonder why. To give the game a 2 out of 5 stars just because he didn't like the two player mode is dishonest and I wouldn't trust his reviews at all. Get a second opinion.
