I Loved 4x4 Evo, so naturally i wanted to try version 2. Finally had an opportunity to purchase an xbox and well this game is darn cheap at costco so what the heck.
The game hasn't changed too much from the first version. Now teams are available which is a nice toucha nd the cars and track list is increased.
The same gripe I had about the first game still applies though. When you purchase an upgrade the computer automatically gets it. If you are winning races and thus earning money, shouldn't the computer have to do the same? Essentially, the rule of thumb is only mod your truck to things you need to be a bit more competative, but not to make a monster truck. Once you have everything you'd want in a truck, the computer is sure to beat you.
Where this game really shines is in two player mode. Computer can't cheat this way, and its just you and a buddy beating up a couple of trucks. Lets face it, its pretty fun to beat up your own SUV and not have to worry about repair bills.
The fully open courses also make the game very fun. In free drive mode, you can practice the courses, and plan for the short cuts which are mandatory if you want to win some races.
Definitely worth the price I bought it for...

O.K. Godgames and Rockstar games did a few things right in this game - but ultimately they failed to produce a playable game. The load times are very lengthy. The menu is needlessly cluttered. In career mode there are 5 AI oppoenent vehicles. It is COMPLETELY impossible to out-accelerate the top car/truck regardless of mods - so the only way to get 1st-place is a lot of luck followed by a straightaway on the last lap - forget skills. For some reason it is TOTALLY impossible to nudge an AI oppoenent out of your way - forget everything you know about physics - going 110 mph and slam into an AI car - you lose he's fine - AI car going 40 and hits you - you are in the ditch my friend. Oh and lets talk about the shoulder of these race tracks! You can and will get STUCK on every little thing. Most games don't make you reverse from behind obstacles - they just penalize your speed - not this game. Trust me - this game deserve awards for its ability to cause needless aggravasion - shame on the Quality Assurance at Godgames and Rockstar games - this would have NEVER gotten by me!
Good game but could be much better

On the surface 4x4 Evo 2 is the ultimate off-road game; it has good graphics, lots of sweet vehicles, and tons of real upgrades. But when you actually start to play you notice many things wrong with the game. My main complaint is with the computer components. They are able to bash, push, rub, and run you off the road without slowing down (in fact they actually speed up!!) while you are left choking in their dust. They also have the ability to catch up with you no matter how far ahead you are or how much faster your vehicle is than theirs.
My other complaint is with the environment. Even though you have a 12" lift kit and 37" tires on your truck don't even think about trying to drive over a rock or you'll find your self stopped dead in your tracks. The same goes with the checkpoint markers; any other obstacle (such as a fence or sign) you can plow right over, but not that little wooden sign marking a checkpoint. And if you miss a checkpoint or drive of a cliff and need to reset your vehicle back on the track the game puts you like a 100 yards back from where you needed to reset, but if one of the computer opponents needs to reset it gets plopped down nicely exactly where it ran into problems.
This is one of those games you want to play over and over again and can really get to liking it a lot, but at the same time hating it enough to brake the CD into a thousand pieces!

This game is well worth the money. You have any and every truck to choose from...and every and any part to buy and install on your truck....need money to build up your vehicle; win a race or two or take on a mission...don't want to do that? Then free roam any where on the map. This is not just a rainy day game. Beware because it is addictive...Happy 4-wheel drivin'.

4x4 Evo 2 has elements of a very good game, but the graphics are so disappointing it isn't worthwhile.
The game centers around a career mode. You start out with $30k and have to buy a vehicle and then earn money for upgrades. You can earn money by participating in races (organized into series) or by completing missions. As you progress up the career path you get involved with teams and have the opportunity to purchase better equipment.
The races take place over large courses with competitors that are nothing short of ruthless. You are free to take any path you want to get to the next checkpoint. In fact, using shortcuts is necessary to be competitive on some tracks. Along the way, the competition will do everything they can to keep you from winning. Expect to be trading paint all the way to the finish.
The missions usually involve finding a location on a map. You are shown a crude map of the location and then given a detail contour map for route-finding. The task is often easier said than done since the terrain is difficult to traverse and finding your goal on the contour map isn't easy. The missions may sound dull, but they actually add a nice touch to an otherwise standard driving game.
Unfortunately the games graphics are so bad it just isn't worth buying. The vehicle models have almost no detail and no damage modelling. The environments (while very large) are visually unappealing and don't appear to be up to XBox "standards" at all.

this game is like GT3A-Spec....but with off-road vehicles.
i dont care what anyone says. this game is...awsome. the physics are accurate and the free roam option is great. the missions are challenging and make use of all the extra addons one can add to vehicles. though the collision with other vehicles is rather odd, its a good thing there is no damage or you would be owing a lot of money for running into trees...you cannot drive through the water. yes you can go down hill in the water but not drive. except you can drive through deep water if you buy a snokel kit.
this game is great and lots of fun. there is always new challenges to overcome.

This game lacks some basic features that I think make racing games interesting. Most importantly, there is no damage caused to the vehicles during the course of the race. For a game with above-average graphics, this is a major oversite that takes away from the gameplay.
This game did not hold my interest for more than a day or two.
