Wait for Perfect Dark

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 4 / 9

To sum up this game it should have been titled, GiveBack. Seeing as how I am about to give it back to the store I bought it from. It's poor on all accounts, graphics, game play, acting, camera work and above all AI. I have never seen such 'dumb' enemies. I have also purchased Medal of Honor for the PSX and it by far has the most intelligent enemies on a console game ever. If you are thinking about getting Winback, stop, rethink your decision and wait for Perfect Dark.

Okay, but not worth the money

This game is bad. If you liked James Bond, like I do you might like this game. I disliked it because of the slow targeting and poor weapons. Some positives are the red dot scope, but don't be confused. James Bond's auto aim helps immensely this game requires many different buttons to be pushed. When you are shot you are incapacitated for about 1 and 1/2 seconds. Which is an eternity with how fast the computer fires. It takes forever to find your friends and when you do, they usually die. All in all this game is ok, but the storyline is bad.

Don't buy it...

Don't buy this game. I've been playing it recently, and although the graphics and gameplay aren't bad, everything else is, especially the cameras. When you're playing, the automatic camera angles are horrible, and I find myself often readjusting them manualy. It becomes almost impossible to fight more than two other men at the same time without dying, because you need to see them to shoot them, and therefore have to readjust the cameras; two shots later and I'm dead. Quite frustrating. Also, the game only has 4 guns, a pistol with unlimited ammo, and shotgun with little ammo, a automatic but not very powerful rifle with limited ammo, and a rocket launcher, with only four rockets. There is also C4 explosives. This does not make for very fun gameplay. If I were you, I would put your money towards another first person shooter, such as GoldenEye 007 or something newer.

Winback lacks several qualities

WInback is a good game, but because of the difficlut controls, bad camera angles, and Jean-Luc's (your character) stupidity makes it only a so-so game.

Because of the manuel cameral you have to continously switching the angles to see who you are shooting at (if any one at all), who's shooting you, or where youa re going so that you don't run into those damn lasers.

Your character also lacks basic moves that almost every other 3rd person shooter has. He can strif (move from side to side), crawl, or even jump. the most impressive move he has is that his is allowed to crouch. you would thing that i specially trained, counter-terroist unit would atleast be able to preform those simple ablilties

Winback: decent storyline with repetitive gameplay

Note: Winback is rated "T" (not "M" like it says at the top of the item description page)

Winback is a game that I hate to give a bad review to because it had so much potential.

What we have here though is a game that doesn't compare well to its competition. For one thing, people think Winback is some sort of Metal Gear Solid for the N64. Well aside from using C4 explosives and using the "back-against-the wall" move to obtain cover this game IS NOT METAL GEAR SOLID. It's story, while being surprisingly good, is nowhere compared to Metal Gear Solid's. The gameplay also is nowhere near MGS. When all you have are 4 or 5 weak weapons to choose from (no grenades or sniper/assault rifle are included) and just a couple accessories (no cardboard box, keycards, smokes, communicator, night/heat vision, binoculars, rations, etc, etc, etc..), painfully similar level layouts and objectives (go from point a to point b disabling lazer-tripwires and dispatching enemies and bosses; "oh and haven't I seen this building before like A DOZEN TIMES?!!") the gameplay gets old.

Then you move to the multiplayer and think "well it should be interesting and (theoretically) sweet to use Winback's gameplay elements in multiplayer" and well, it's just like the single player- fun for a while than very dissapointing. The killing blow to it is that when you get shot you flash and are temporarily invincible. I hate this because I see no need for it and that it ruins all of the fun of being on top of your enemy. Why should I have to take cover after I shot my enemy? Shouldn't they be seeking cover instead?

Apparently there are people out there who really like this game though and to a certain extent I can sympathize. The storyline is good- the dialogue is well written and it keeps things suspenseful. However I didn't like the fact that (*SPOILER*) everybody on your team dies. Just when I thought I would get a chance to fight with someone on my team he/she dies. WHY?!!
Also the controls are good enough. I wouldn't mind some more control for manual aim (i.e. target specific parts of the body) but other than that they do a well enough job.
The graphics are OK. So is the sound.

It's because of all of Winback's good things that it pains me to see that the game as a whole is so painfully marred and damaged by its negatives. If more was thought of and put into the game it could have been great and instead of writing a bad review for it I could be writing a good one.

Sigh.

This game is o.k. Take my word for it, that's all it is, o.k.! Well I didn't want to give it a two or three, because it does have goodpoints, but it's not nearly good enough to get a four or five, those ratings are there for games like Goldeneye! I rented the game yesterday, and I got frustrated, because first of all, you have to have a "controller pack", (I always called them memery packs), but anyway, that's what screws you, because once you turn the game off, you have to start alllllllllllll over again, which sucks, believe me! Second of all, ... the camera views will definetly screw you, and I use that word loosely, because when your in a bad position, like in front of a bad guy, the camera won't give you the angle you want, no sirre, it gives you a behind the trees view, giving you a better chance at getting shot. And the third thing, which might be worse for some people, theres not much you do but go around shooting people, which is cool, but it gets old, and it gets old fast! I wish it had objectives like in goldeneye. But if your looking for a game that will be awesome at first, and then screw you, get this game. Ok, so maybe I am too hard on this game, if you've got the time to master the controls, and get used to the camera view, ok, get winback, but if your looking for a cool first person shooter, get goldeneye! It's the best game yet! Believe me, I'm a 14 year old critic/gamer, just like you, and I read these reviews just like you, so go back and look at what I have said, because I'm sitting here typing this review so you wont throw your money out, like I would have if I had bought this game, before renting it. Thanks for reading my review, I hope it helps you in making the right decision!

This game is a lot of fun starting out, but after a couple of hours playing it it gets very monotonous. The levels all seem the same and take far too long to complete. The camera gets incresingly annoying along the way. Multiplayer is fun but gets boring fast. Rent it for a blast but I wouldn't recommend buying.

Winback: Not the best game, but still worth the money!

I first noticed this game when I saw it in an add. It showed a few screen shots but I was still curious. Well, I ended up getting the game for Christmas. I started playing and I really got into it. I know a lot of people think it's like Goldeneye or Medal Gear Solid, but I don't think you can really compare. Although the camera angles get a little annoying and there is still a few bugs in it... The graphics and game play make up for it. For a little backround: You are sort of a stealth spy type character named Jean Luc. You're trying to rescue the rest of your team because they are all missing from a helecopter explosion. Then, once you find them you must stop a satelite from blowing up major cities. I know...I know...The plot doesn't seem to original, but once you get playing you'll know there's a lot more to it. There are a lot of neat tricks you can do also. Put your back to a wall and peak around corners, duck behind boxes and so on. You will need to use every skill you have to complete the game. It may not be the best game for N64, but it is worth the money. Very challenging, VERY exciting!
