The fact is, Goemon had never really gotten that much publicity. Half of the games in the Goemon franchise never reached American shores. Mystical Ninja is essentially the first Goemon game for the N64 out of 2...not bad when most people expect 0. And it has become pretty much THE cult classic for the N64. Most cult classics are things that do poorly in its initial release, but later develop legions of backers extolling its greatness. Some cult classics really are that great, and the people have valid points. Others really aren't that good at all, and the people behind are just pulling argument out of the air. So is Mystical Ninja an example of the former or the latter?

This game is structured like Zelda and plays like Zelda, except you can switch characters with the push of a C-button. I mean, you go around an overworld fighting enemies and getting ryo. Then you play castles (which are like dungeons) and fight a boss at the end, after which you get a keepsake. w00t! Ahem. It's like Zelda, but it's not Zelda. It's Goemon. And Goemon just doesn't have the polish Zelda has. Yeah. The graphics are decidedly like the run-of-the-mill platform games that appeared on the N64 in the last 3 years of the 20th century. But saying Mystical Ninja is not worthy because its graphics are bad is judging a book by its cover. To pass Mystical Ninja as bad game because of its graphics is unfair. We'd have to look at its gameplay.

Well, the gameplay isn't Zelda either. The camera and controls just lack the precision of not only Ocarina of Time but also Super Mario 64! In one dungeon I found myself having to repeat a section several agonizing times because the camera angle was so off! Ah well. Outside of dungeons, the controls work pretty well. Meh. What else can I say? The humor found in the game is pretty nice. There's a laugh track. There's an elephant narrator that rarely appears. There are dogs smarter than humans. There's Yae, who is pretty good-looking despite being 1st-generation pixels. Add that to the Japanese feel of the game, and you get something that is pretty surreal. The songs get stuck in your head too. So, what is my final judgment? Um...it's a good game, but it lacks polish.

THIS IS A WELL DESERVED 4 STARS

According to my 11 year old: This is a great epic, it is loads of fun and is worth buying. But remember it's a Japanese style game with English subtitles so not for everyone.

I think is a great one and has the best graphics are the best, such as the same with the excellent story line. It is a mario history lesson basically and is about the only game that uses the c-buttons as something besides camera views. With hours of fun play with 4 characters and magic spells, this is a keeper!

I have played this game for 16 hours straight once and have owned it for over half a year. I love this game just because of how fun it is and the simplistic, but extremely funny humour. You can even learn some Japanese(breakdown=breakdown! This is a total non-violent, yet fun, and will last as long as you have a good heart for good humour

Outstanding game

Mystical Ninja is one of the funniest games I have ever played. It was so addictive, that the first time I rented it, I didn't take it back to the store for a week. But it was worth every late charge. The story line is great, the characters are unique and hilarious, and the gameplay is one of the most fun I've seen in years. Don't think, just buy this game. You won't regret it.

Zelda meets bizarre, beautiful Japanese world

No, the jokes don't translate that well to the American version. But so what? The graphics are lush, the soundtrack is laced with some genuinely gorgeous melodies, and--most importantly--THE GAME IS FUN!!! The controls are easy and make for smooth playing, plus the characters and worlds are imaginative and quite like no other.

If you're a fan of the adventure/RPG-style gameplay of Zelda, then you'll most certainly like this game's gameplay because it's exactly like Zelda's. What's unique about this game (apart from the comedically bizarre characters and dungeons) is that you command four characters, each of whom possesses special abilities and whom you switch between with a simple press of the down-C button.

Each area you explore alternates between the bizarre and the beautiful, the chaotic and the serene. However, there's no question that every world that makes up this game is rich with vibrant atmosphere and colors.

I enjoyed every minute of this game, and many of my friends also love it. It's challenging, but never frustrating or near-impossible. Sure, it's a little odd and it doesn't always translate well; but it's fun, and that's what counts.

Mystical Ninja is Konami's Greatest Success!

I first bought this game two years ago. I was a bit iffy on getting it because it was a foreign game from Japan that included elements that were not common in the United States. The first time i played I was wowed by the graphics and the play control. The story also, was very unusual, unlike anything i had ever seen before in a game. Strange alien invaders had come to Japan to turn it into a stage for their latest theater production, and Goemon was supposed to stop them. Sound weird? That's because it is. Goemon has his trusty sidekick Ebisumaru and later meets up w/ his ninja friend Jen and find a crazy robot named Izayaki. The vast worlds and many areas of the game took me over a year to complete. The one bad thing about this game is that it lacks an internal memory, so you have to use a controller pack to save your progress. This game is one of the most underspoken;it never got the acclaim that it should have received. If you ever decide to buy this game, youre doing yourself a favor, and maybe one day, Goemon will be discovered by gamers around the world, but until then, it will remain in the shadows of giants like Mario and Zelda. Mystical Ninja is in my opinion Konami's Greatest Success!!!

My friend and i happened to be bored one afternoon, so we headed for blockbuster in search for a new N64 game to play. We saw mystical ninja and decided to give it a try, even though we had never heard of it. As soon as we got home, we gave it a try. It turned out to be the best game we had ever played! the graphics are excellent for N64, and the story line is very well thought out. The only problem with it is no internal memory. My friend and i have rented it several times, NEVER getting bored of defeating the same villans again(since we would have to start over). I'll be buying the game finnaly (it's pretty hard to find). I don't really know what people are talking about, it being a "culture shock". so what if it's set in a different enviroment than what us americans "expect". i didn't find anything wrong with it begining set in japan. i though it was quite nice to find it set somewhere different than what we usually expect. i've also heard that mystical ninja was BEFORE zelda, so Zelda was actually the one biting off of mystical ninja. but i'm not sure if that information is quite accurate.

mystical ninja has AWESOME music. i don't care what other people say. it's MUCH better music than what is featured on other games. i HIGHLY recommend mystical ninja over any other N64 adventure game. ;)
