Four-Player Dr. Mario

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0
Date: September 03, 2008

Dr. Mario 64 is a great game for people who like Tetris and Dr. Mario. If you have played Dr. Mario for the NES (1980s) or SNES (1990s), then you know that the game can be rather addictive. However, the Nintendo 64 version is even better in that you can play against three other players, either computer or human.

The music for the Dr. Mario series remains the same with some upgrades as the system gets newer. Dr. Mario 64 also has the best graphics int he series, of course, including cool background sets (that are somewhat hard to see during gameplay, anyway).

In all, this is a strategy game. There are different versions of Dr. Mario to play on this cartridge (such as Story mode and some team-competitive games), as well as handicap settings for players' abilities (speed and number of viruses to kill), which means that you are trying to beat both your opponent and your own history. The greatest stratey in this game, of course, is trying to maximize your points by utilizing creative pill drops that do a lot of clearing and thus dumping on your opponent. I would definitely call this a "brain game," especially given the time element to it. (The game speeds up if too much time has elapsed. Also, the music changes to a faster pace when one player is nearing his or her final virus(es) to kill.)

I recommend this game for children ages 10 and up, and only for those kids who enjoy puzzles, geometry, and competition. Everyone else will just get frustrated during those "stressful" moments, and I have actually witnessed the ugly side of people who were not meant to play these types of games. (Silly, but true.) So I am essentially recommending this game for the nerdy kids and adults in your life. However, good luck in trying to find this game anywhere - it is actually a classic title and one that most people do not give up easily. If you do get it, keep it and take care of it. The going rate for this game in September 2008 is about $75, which is about $35-$45 higher than when it first went on sale in the early 2000s.

Dr Mario rocks! or so my wife tells me :-)

I really got this for my wife, BUT it is evidently a great game. She plays it by the hours - so much so, that the kids and I can't get near it!

I have palyed thousands of games in my life, but Dr. Mario is by far the best game ever. It is so competitive and so fun, that you will literally sit infront of the screen for 4 hours without realizing that more that 30 minutes had gone by. Anyone who is competitive would love this game (if you haven't noticed thats me) :) So buy this game and you wont regret it.

Take-a two mushrooms and call-a me inna morning.

I must admit that while Dr. Mario's medical background is shady and unoriginal, his procedural methods can be fun. It's a love or hate affair. Those who've never had an appointment with the doctor may take to it, but others who in the past made regular visits might feel that he hasn't kept up with the times.

Mario - I'm onto you. Think you can run around playing doctor while hocking your sugar pills? You might be offering your services for a seemingly affordable $29.95, but didn't we already try this medicine? Better get Lawyer Luigi on the phone.

Masterpiece of gaming

In the late eighties and early nineties, Nintendo made a name for their Mario character by making him the star of many wildly successful platformer action/adventure games. By the time the eighties screeched to a halt, people knew that they could go to Mario for a high quality game. In the last part of the decade, Tetris caused a puzzle game revolution, and Nintendo obviously wanted to cash in on this, so they cast Mario in a puzzle game - appropriately entitled Dr. Mario. And now the game has been remade for the Nintendo 64! Read on for my review of this remake of the classic puzzler.

PROS:
-The game is easy to learn, yet difficult to master. These are the best types of video games out there.
-You can do a multiplayer mode of up to four players!
-The game stays true to its roots through and through, making as few changes as possible.

CONS:
-The lack of improvements over previous versions of the game may be reason enough for die-hard gamers not to buy a new version of the game.
-Individual screens are too small in the four-player mode.

OVERALL:
-Got a Nintendo 64? If you own this game, good for you. If not, what the hell are you waiting for? Dr. Mario is arguably the greatest puzzle game of all time, and not owning it is the ultimate sin! Get on eBay or your local used video games dealer, and get yourself a copy. By not owning this masterpiece of a game, you hurt only yourself.

This game has a few minor flaws, but in the end it is pure puzzle perfection. The gameplay is so enjoyable it's almost impossible to put it down without at least one hour worth of play time. The multiplayer is a blast, the only problem is that the four player mode scrunches up the screen- making it difficult to see. I personally find the music quite catchy, but the graphics are nothing special. Also, the game does not really add much to the basic Dr. Mario formula of NES days. Still, this puzzle game is so addictive that it would be silly not to try it.

The main reason I purchased this game was the price and I have to say it was well worth the money. "Dr. Mario" is as much fun as "Pokemon Puzzle League" and has provided my daughter with hours of fun. Recently she taught me how to play the game and I have to admit it is quite addicting. I highly recommend this game because of the price but most of all because of how much fun it is.
