A deep, strategic fighter

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 2

This is not Mortal Kombat. The fights are slowed down, and the fighting is more strategic. If you're patient, you'll get a lot out of this game. Serious players will find a lot to sink their teeth into.

Fun to play, easy to learn moves.

This ws a fun a game. I was actually able to beat my brother. The moves were quick and easy to learn. Graphics are ok.

Just another fighting game

I played this and I think that it's pretty bad. The charachters are very blocky but otherwise the graphics are pretty good. I think that if you want a fighting game get Mortal Kombat. Dark Rift is alright but not great.

Dark Rift The only 60 frame a second game on N64

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

Where to begin, Dark Rift was an early realease on the Nintendo 64 and while its steep price of 74 dollars it now can be bought for around ten bucks or five at some places like GAME FORCE.
Although next gen systems fighting are a far cry from this game, but compared to the small amount of fighters on N64 this next to Mace the Dark Age is one of the best. The graphics for the time had minor qualms about them, the characters had low polygon counts but this keeps it running at a smooth 60 fps. The lighting is excellent, fireballs and specials and weapons that glow such as eve's saber tint green off her body and other characters do the same. The AI however is tough even on easy, Dark Rift boasted an intelligent AI back when it first became available, which the developers programmed the game to do simply this unlike other fighting games, the computer will get wise to the same attack if you keep using it, ( remember the fireball fights of Street Fighter? ), and such will counter this technique also this applies to fighting style such as passive or aggressive fighting styles and while this sound promising in theory, as the game progresses and the difficulty of the cpu changes like all fighting games which can be hard, especially when the computer counters eveything. However, this may be the funny thing, if you keep backing away by double tapping back and then jump in the air while the computer runs at you and while you jump hit your c button the computer will contiue to do this over and over again and works for eveybody except for Demitron the final boss who can teleport around the stage. Dark Rift always reminded me of the very first Tekken with weapons and less combos, and while the combos can be difficult to execute with a little practice they are easy to pull off. My only real complaint about the game is the difficulty and the fact that every character in the game has an alternate costume, you can't select it and some the other costumes are nice.
PRO's = 60 frames a second, nice combos, unigue characters, great lighting effects.

CON's = Difficult, characters are blocky due to low polygon count but still look good though, not able to select alternate costume or skin for the characters.

SUM IT UP = Great fighter on the Nintendo 64, especially for the low price.

not a role playing game as its name would suggest

its a fighter.well,it seems the only video games n64 ever made that were the mk[mortal kombat] series.this is just a cheap rip off.all the things that make a fighting game cool are absent here.just stick with mk.

I just played this game for the first time at my friend's house, and I really enjoyed it! It's his game, and I was still owning him! I enjoy the easy combos, the painful-looking projectiles, and the high framerate. I didn't get to play tournament mode, but he told me the final boss has a combination of everyone's attacks. I'm probably going to get this game, especially for the EXTREMELY low price of $0.99! That's a swoop (as my mom calls it XD)!
