Do not buy this unless you are prepared to pay the server

This game requires the player to pay a monthly fee to the server. The game can only be played in multiplayer on the server. Unless you are willing to pay monthly; do not purchase this silly game...

Boring to death

I bought JumpGate because someone said, "oh wow, it's the best on-line game i ever played" and "it's like privateer". Well, IT'S NOT anything like privateer, that game was fun. This game is about the same as going to work only it takes longer then 8 hours to do anyway. Ok, ok the facts are:

1. (...)
2. You start the game with a slow ship and can't get a fast one for about 2 weeks of loooooooong hours playing it.
3. No video card need apply (cheesy ships VERY cheesy)
4. Can you say, "loco motion"? I knew you could.

Or should i say boooooring hours, it wouldn't be so bad if there was something to look at but there is not. The ships should be named "Polygon 1" and "Polygon 2" because that's how many they used to model them. The best looking thing in the game is the box. Which brings up another point, EVERY time EVERY time you do ANYTHING even if you dock or change something on your ship you can't do anything until the little robot loader finishes some stupid animation (about 20-30 seconds). The loco-motion ship controls make it very tricky to dock, there is no auto-pilot whatsoever, which means you have to fly to the station, dock with the station (SLOWLY) and make one mistake on a mission and tap something, BOOM, you go back to the last station you docked with. There is no room for error your ship even a good ship will die instantly if you hit something and with loco-motion flight its almost impossible not to unless you go slow all the time. Yes there are breaking thrusters; they take about 1 minute to come to a complete stop from a full burn on even a slow ship. To move around you must travel (again no auto-pilot) from gate to gate, across the sectors, we are talking about 70,000 clicks apart at some points, needless to say that takes forever or about 30-40 minutes a short mission. True there are real people on-line you can talk to but don't forget yourself because your ship will just keep right on going while you type till it hits something. Don't worry though if you sit still you will get attacked by the "enemy" also known as the con-flux they look like pink squid/snails/manta-rays and till you get a real ship can kill you in one shot, they are also a lot faster then you are so if they hang around a sector where you need to be you'll need some other players to take them out before you can enter. They also can follow you through a jumpgate and you won't out run them. Well there is a lot more but let's just say I *HATE* this game (...)

I plan on selling it if anyone wants a copy? hahahahaaaaaaaaaha

No Joy - space truck driver game

Save your money and time. 3DO doesn't have the technical resources to do multi player gaming. The game constantly disconnects. When it doesn't disconnect the online screen is jumpy. The game itself has a weak attempt at an game economy; where players are space truck drivers on hauling missions. Long, boring, endless hauling missions. There is a chat window. Player's exchange low brow humor, or mindless dribble. All this for a mere $10/mth subscription fee.

Hold Up Without A Gun

This game is frustrating because when you purchase it it seems like a good buy but the actual truth is that you can only play it multiplayer online and, when you decide to get online to play, first you have to pay a registration fee and then a monthly usage fee and not to mention for the time on the internet through your local internet provider. Overall it is a bad program design UNLESS you are willing to pay all the fees.

Locks up on 2 different computers

I was really looking forward to playing this game, but every time I try to dock or crash into something, the game locks up. I've tried it on two different computers, both of them fairly up-to-date, and had the same problem. Jumpgate support was not very helpful. They offered to exchange the game but wouldn't give me a refund. I'm not interested in any of their other games so I guess I'm out of luck.

(...). There are some inbalances which result in most of the top pilots belonging to the same faction. There is a 10 hour safety period where noone can kill you if you have just started, which helps a lot. Flying takes a lot of getting used to. Without a joystick it is nearly impossible. I found it annoying that when I selected joystick+keyboard as the control method, all of the controls were on the joystick. I had to assign the controls that would intuitivly belong to the keyboard back to the keyboard. Luckly the controls are 100% customizable.

If the game had worked 100% then I could give it a more complete review.

goal?

well the main problem in jumpgate is the lack of reason to play, you play diablo, you want to kill diablo, you play starcraft or allegiance, you want to kill your ennemies, you play a race game, you wants to win, but then you play jumpgate, at frist, yu see the mission computer and wants to suceed the missions, since it's persistant, you feel like doing something helpfull, but after some hours, you notice that beside raising a % slowy it does no good, when it reach 100%, a new base appear, big deal... the missions are easy... well more than easy, most are just travelling somewhere, do something, then come back, 95 of the time you won't meet any opposition. the graffics aren't bad, the stations are amazing and they are a must see, but i wouldn't pay $40 to see a space station in a game that i won't play anymore. the combats arealmost inexsistant(unless you go in the simulator). there is no reason to fight, no reason to do the boring missions. the 3 factions are allied with each other. the only reason buying the game would worth it, it would be to be a part of the community, and maybe have some good chat(since chatting is funnier than playing).

Well actually

I give this game a fair rating. Though you can download the game for free at jossh.com, buying this game is pretty optional if you want the 30 day free instead of the 10 day free trial for this game.

Anyways, the problem with this game is that the graphics are way out dated and the developers refuses to up the sys specs to just make the graphics better, but the game play is excellent with its unique flight engine, especially when its challanging when it comes to hauling commodites. As for the playerbase for this game, sadly, theres not enough players for this game to go around so thats the reason I left jumpgate for a reason. Another reason is that the size of the universe is small. Plenty of useless ships in the game which are not PvP worthy. Plus, it would also take ungodly amount of your time to just practice PvP in the simulator. There is too much work, not enough play. It's like doing your 2nd chores. Dying in PvP is quite expensive as well. The only type of playerbase that is left are the hardcore players.

The learning curve for this game is kind of hard compared to the other space games using arcade flight engine.

If you are new to this game, and a fairly experienced pvper that wants to cause trouble only in the deregulated sectors or play a role as a pirate, I would recommend that you don't do it until this game gets a lot more players just because the whole player base would go after you.

The last I would like to say is that at least they improved the light fighters to make it go faster than fighter class(which is level 26).

I wish my luck to the developers to start putting this game into marketing soon.

Cool game with great promise for space sim fans

I hesitate to give this game 5 stars because I'm not sure it has earned them yet. The online portion of the game is in it's infancy, which has it's good and bad sides. The good side is that there is lots of room for the story to expand and unfold in ways that will make this one of the most entertaining games I've ever played online. The bad is that it can become tedious and repetitive as you work your way up through the ranks.

You do start out the game with the volkswagon beetle of spaceships. Equipping it with the standard loadout provided by TRI. This makes it slow, and mostly useless. This provides the incentive to make it to the next level of ranks and make money. The starting benefits you get depend on the faction you choose which I think is a cool option. There are five factions, of which you can play for any one of three. The ships from each faction are different, but the components are interchangable, another thing I like. To make money and experience you can mine, pirate, kill Conflux (the mystery alien race in the game) and trade. Interaction with other players in the Jumpgate universe is usually pleasent, although there are players who make it a point to just shoot anything that moves. Usually, larger squads (player controlled teams) of fighters will stomp on these people. Balance of play is achieved by players. I would recommend reading the Forums on the website to check into joining a squad as well. Squad play adds much to the game.

Above are a few of the things that I like about the game. I hope Netdevil and 3do enhance it further. Things have changed in the two weeks since I began playing. I would recommend this game highly. Well worth the money.

Great game...but hard to learn...

I was on the beta test team and during that time the good foaks over at netdevil added more weapons, equipment, and ships and they will continue to do so...but like it said hard to learn... you need to read the whole manual to learn how to do the most basic things, but once you get past that the game get easy to use. With this game you can pop in for 1 hour and do some missions thenleave it for a week and go back in with no problem

OK, It's actually pretty fun

Well, I have to amend my 2-star review of this game. It's pretty much got me hooked, and I have a fun time with it. The developers have made a few changes to the game that perk it up a bit, and the game is deep enough to where you can grow into it. The only remaining problem I have with the game is that it does take a while to figure out how to really enjoy it. When you first start out running transport or mining missions it can be a bit tedious. The solution I found to this is to occasionally enter the "simulator" mode and get some heated PVP combat practice. Joining an active squad is also quite helpful to game enjoyment. The game continues to be actively developed, so it continues to grow and improve. If you give it a chance, this one's a winner!
