I just finished Gothic 2 and all I can say is.. WOW, what an awesome game. The story line was great and the slight quirkiness from this game having been translated from German to English helped make it unique. I really liked the ability to explore and do tons of unrelated quests without being trapped by a story line.

I am not what you would call a gamer, but this game is a hidden jewel among PC games. How I stumbled on the Gothic II game back in 2003 is pure chance. When I started playing it I was hooked. The graphics are beautiful and I love the genre. My one complaint would be the voices are a little corny. I would much prefer authentic English or some other Western European accent. When I heard that an add on was coming I was thrilled. Unfortunately, it did not come out in the English until late 2005 or early 2006. I personally did not get it until 2006. I have been playing the add on and I completely enjoy it just like I did Gothic II. I understand Gothic III is in the makings, please don't make us English speakers wait too long. Like the title says I think the Gothic games are some of the best kept gaming secrets here in the U.S. keep them coming.

Bought this game on the strength of some reviews here but I was very dissapointed with it. Clunky control system really put me off.

Yeah, Gothic 2 offers a really impressive fantasy world as you didnt see it in any other game. Its really a pity that it wasnt released earlier in north america. Its much better than Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights.
Gothic 2 has a huge detailed designed world with great quests and a great story. Its really adictive.

This game rocks, you've got action, storytelling, quests, your own path, linear gameplay, and the world is alive, people have jobs and work times and play times. The controls are a little quirky, but worth the hassle.
Pretty overrated

The controls are very difficult and I understand they wanted "realism" but they killed a lot of fun by making you just so damned vulnerable to EVERYTHING. I'm a long-time gamer and I can handle a tough game but this is just frustrating to the extreme. Plus for all the people talking about immersion...I just don't see it. I just couldn't get myself to care about the world or story I was in; it didn't grab me like some games do.
Just get Oblivion instead

Graphics aren't the most important part of a game to me. I already owned Oblivion when I bought Gothic 2 because I was hoping it would be a darker and more mature "Oblivion" style RPG.
While it does have much more mature content than Oblivion,.. I never got to see it because of the bad controls,.. bad collision and lack of fun. (By bad collision I'm talking about your character walking through or getting stuck on objects.)
The only weapons you can find at first are a tree branch and a tiny dagger. There are no easy enemies to fight for a Level 1 character. Even the little gremlin looking guys in the first cave by that pond at the beginning totally beat the crap out of you with ease. The controls make combat an unfun chore.
I'm a patient and forgiving gamer but Gothic 2 barely has half the quality of Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion. If you've never played Oblivion and don't have an XBox 360 or a PC that can run it,.. then maybe you'll get into Gothic 2. It has much lower system requirements.

Wow! This game is an awsome and challenging RPG game. Unfortunately, it comes with lots of bugs and is too challenging to start.
To get the bad out of the way, it's bugs, though not game crashing, can be very annoying. To begin with, this game ran fine on my Windows XP computer until it's time to update my anti-virus software. After the update, the game no longer run. As much as I like this game, there's no way I'll stop running anti-virus for it. So I load it on one of my back-up computers, which does not have anti virus software, and it runs fine. Even though the gold edition supposedly came with all the update, it's still very buggy. For example, you can challenge a bunch of mercenary in the game to a duel, but you cannot hit the farmers the mercenary are protecting. However, for each mercenary I defeated, I had to pay a fine for hitting a farmer even though I did not. On the other hand, there's 'good' bugs as well. There are certain valuable stuff that are still in my inventory after I sell it off about 4 or 5 times, thus pocketing a bunch of gold.
The other thing to consider that may be bad is that this is a very challenging game. Your charater is total wimp in the beginning and is very clumsy in combat -- almost any lowly creature out there will have a field day with him. Yes, him...you don't have a choice to create a character, which is a big minus in an RPG game, but the game is so good I am willing to overlook it. After level up a couple time, which took a long time, to the point where I can kill a pack of wolves and began to feel good, the first orc I ran into killed me with 2 blows -- such a humble experience. This is why the game so frustrating and the control seems so awkward that, for most beginners, quiting is a very viable and intelligent option.
Nevertheless, after much trial and error, and endless reloads,I was able to transform my character into a killing machine with fluid swordplay and devastating combo moves -- the control seems much more responsive. Therefore, patient and hard work paid off and leveling up brough a justifiable sense of accomplishment. If you can get this far, at this point, the game will have you hooked completely into its vast and extremely immersive world, and it is an awsome experience. I've played game for more than 20 years now, and it is rare that a game can do that.
It is inevitable to compare this game to Morrowind. If you like Morrowind, then you must play Gothic 2. Though Gothic 2 lacks the vast scale or the grandeur of Morrowind, it's world feels more alive and gameplay is more intense and enjoyable than Morrowind. I like Morrowind a lot, (probably more than Oblivion, though I have not finished Oblivion yet) but honestly feel that Gothic 2 is much more fun to play through again. In fact, I have Gothic 2 loaded on 2 computers where I played a mercenary in one game and a mage in another, and it is a very different experience.
Furthermore, Gothic 2 is made for adult and deserved its "M" rating. It's a dark, violent, mature, and realistic game world. It's both funny and poignant to hear an NPC proclaimed "I love this s***!" after slaying a wild animal. There is a sleazy brothel in town where you can actually pay to "have fun", which comes with its own gratuitous cut scene. It's corny, but it does round out the immersive world of Gothic 2, where you find out real quick that there is no light or dark side. The only choice is the lesser (or greater) of the 3 or 4 evils (faction) and all are interested in using you to achieve their own goals.
In conclusion, I really like Gothic 2 despite all of its shortcomings. I like it so much that I am also playing Gothic 3 right now (along with Oblivion, which will make interesting comparison and contrast) and I have recently bought Gothic 1.
If you have the following: 1)the patient to overcome the immense frustration in the beginning. 2) the annoyance of the bugs. 3) the dexterity to dish out death and destruction -- yes, combat, especially melee, depends on your dexterity a great deal -- almost to the point of FPS level. Although Gothic is in third person, along with character level and experience, your hand/eye coordination will definately determine the outcome of combat (FPS gamers will do well in Gothic 2 combat though they may not like the intensive RPG part). And 3) the intense desire to play Morrowing - type RPG game where you can totally lose yourself within the game world. If you do, get Gothic 2. For the current price ($9.99 - $14.99) it's one hell of a deal.
If you have played Gothic 2, please post a review. I'd really like to hear what you think of it. Perhaps one day, game developer will read our reviews and make more games that will be as good as Gothic 2 (but with less bugs).
Update: (3/7/07) After playing Gothic 3, which really should be renamed Gothic 3 - Gothic Gone Holywood (it's horrible - see my review as to why), I did 2 things immediately: 1) bought another copy of Gothic 2 as back up - yes this game is a treasure. And 2) I really took my time playing Night of the Raven because I don't want the experience to end too quickly.
Damn... I thought Gothic 2 is challenging in the beginning... Night of the Raven is even harder!!! But it seems more detailed and more fun, at least so far. It will be a while before I know for sure since I savor every moment of NOTR. At any rate, I felt elated that I purposefully delayed playing NOTR since I have this nagging suspicion that Gothic 3 will sucks - which it does - big time. By the way, Oblivion, though not in the same league as Gothic 2, beats Gothic 3 - Gothic Gone Holywood hands down.

Purchased Stubbs-Zombie, Spellforce Platinum and Gothic Gold.
I contacted Aspyr due to a "key bug" in Spellforce Platinum and found out(...customer support)Aspyr embedds STARFORCE in their games.
I won't write another STARFORCE review: read Stubbs or Spellforce Platinum on my view and others on STARFORCE.
I already own Gothic 2; great game.
IMO, it's better than Gothic, which I rate 5 stars.
Get the original; less potential problems.
Night of the Raven has lots of bugs

I played Gothic II when it first came out and it was and still is my favorite game, and I have played many, many games. It is true that it is very slow in the beginning, until you have reached a high enough level to kill anything in order to complete quests, and although there is a quest log, you should still write down where to find the quest giver, and you find yourself wandering around a lot wondering what to do (download a walkthrough), but despite this it is the most immersive RPG I have played, and afterwards I felt that I had actually been in that world, which has not happened in any other game. You can get more information on the main game from other reviews. I am writing this to warn gamers about the expansion, Night of the Raven. I encountered at least 3 game stopping bugs, and could not finish the game. I know what should happen, since I have played the original game twice. The expansion was a waste of money. I didn't know how many stars to give this since I would rate the original game a 5 stars and the expansion as zero.
