For DOOM lovers mostly

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1

With more advanced games out there like Duke Nukem 3D and Quake out there, this game won't be of much good for anyone but the most dedicated DOOM players. So unless you are DOOM lover, this is not meant for you.

The worst game ever. I know it says it has 3d grafics but thats a lie it has no grafics at all! !LOL! If you buy this game you are pretty stupid!

The one that started the craze, and still fun

Anybody that calls DOOM "very poor" does not know his gaming history, among other things.

Wolfenstein 3D was arguably the grandaddy of FPS games, but DOOM is the one that really started the craze. I was absolutely addicted to DOOM when it came out.

If you have been weened on only the newer 3D accelerated games such as Half Life, Quake III, and Unreal Tournament, then DOOM's non-accelerated "2.5D" graphics might look very dated and ugly to you these days. But in 1994, this was IT. And guess what? For pure shoot-em-up gameplay, weapon balance, and atmosphere, it is STILL hard to beat DOOM.

I am still giving this one 5 stars. It will always be a classic. Any game that can suck me in and keep me, red-eyed, staring at my monitor for months on end (with DM play and user maps)...well, you can't ask for much more than that.

Though I, too, have moved on to other newer games, if you've never played DOOM before, you owe it to yourself to experience it. Fantastic stuff.

DOOMEE RIGHT, HAHA!

SIMPLY PUT, THIS GAME IS A ONE OF A KIND. IF STUPID MEANS PLAYING A GAME WITH LOTS OF ACTION AND CHALLENGING MAZES, WITH 7 WEAPONS, AND BEING SCARED SHIITE-LESS (WHEN PLAYED ALONE IN THE DARK), THNE YES, I MUST CONFESS MY STUPIDITY. THIS GAME ROCKS. THE LEVELS ARE DIFFICULT, AND THE BAD BOYS DON'T STOP COMING, AND THATS IN KIDDIE MODE. I REALLY HOPE THEY MAKE A NEW DOOM. I'D DEFINATELY BUY IT

Good for collectors and first person gamers

I must add something to this that is commonly mentioned with Wolfenstein and Doom, but it is not true.

Some credit Doom with being the original first person game, while others say it was Wolfenstein.

Both are false. If you want to see the original FIRST PERSON perspective game, you'll find it in an old 1983 game called 3-Demon, which was only CGA.

What was it? Pac-man from his point of view. No weapons, but I never said shooter. 3-Demon was out nearly 10 years before Wolfenstein, and it WAS first person, though they didn't call it that because that term had not been invented for games yet.

While some would argue and say that Wolf or Doom was, 3-Demon did the same thing: you look out the characters view. It amazes me how few people remember this game.

That said, given the fact that Doom is now almost 7 years old, coming out in 12/93, it still isn't that bad. You have to remember that back then, the average person was lucky to have 4 meg of memory. They used 320x200x256 graphics which by todays standards aren't much, but we're talking old technology.

What's wrong with retro games? A lot of early 80's games are coming back as well. Doom reminds us of our humble beginnings. Limited colors, few monster frames, but solid game play.

Blood, Duke Nukem, Unreal, Half-Life, and countless others didn't exist yet. This is all we had.

If you like old games, are a collector, or a die hard first person shooter fan, this is a great addition.

It's gettin' obsolete

Doom is a killer game...

Unfortunatly, after the coming of games like Duke Nukem 3D, Quake and Unreal, Doom seems a little, uhhh... old. Not to say it isn't fun! This game is hours of entertainment, it's just that after being able to jump, have more debris/ carnage, and voices in newer games, it leaves "Doom" in the dust. If you've never played this game (I.E. you've been in a coma), it's probably one of the best you'll ever come across... Doom is addictive, it's just that the standard for this type of game has been so very much improved!

It's Doom. Doom. It's hard to believe, but it's possible that a lot of people are too young to have played this when it came out, all of seven years ago. Basically, you run around a series of techno / medieval levels, shooting things. It's very simple and good fun - indeed, it's a lot more fun than the technologically-superior follow-up 'Quake'. If you've ever wanted to mow down a room full of zombies with a burst of chaingun fire, this is the game for you. It's a modern classic, and just as much fun as it ever was - as with 'Wolfenstein' you can only really play it in fifteen-minute bursts before getting bored, but the small size and speed of the game on modern machines means that you can use it as a desktop toy, a diversion whilst doing something else. And as a piece of history it's unsurpassed, network game and all.

This package contains the original 'Doom' and two extra sections, both of which are very hard indeed. The game has been updated for Windows '95, and can run at a slightly higher resolution to the original. Note that there's a superior 'Doom Collection' out there, which compiles 'Final Doom', 'Doom 2', and a thousand-odd extra levels.

In addition, it's worth finding the 'GLDoom' patch, which enables 3D-acceleration and higher resolutions. This transforms the game - you can see all the way into the distance.

As for '3-Demon', '3D Monster Maze' for the ZX81 beats it by three years.
