It revitalised the RPG Industry, but it still has problems

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 23 / 30

For me, the two true greatest RPGs of all time will always be Ultima VII (it came in two parts). The problem was that we didn't really seeany RPGs after this until Fallout. There were many failed ones that not many people played, they were all busy playing Wolfenstein and Commander Keen (both great games).
Fallout, I think, captured the public eye again because it was simple. The character creation is simple, but it is actually quite complex in the way it affects the game. The story was somewhat complex, though not overly, and the game itself was fun to play, from the dialogue to the fighting.
In 2077 World War III occured, fought over the few resources left to humanity. The world was almost entirely depopulated. A few managed to hide out in underground bunkers known as Vaults.
You play as a person from Vault 13, whose people haven't emerged for eighty years. The chip that purifies the water from the Vault is broken, and you must find a new one or your people will die. So you, an inexperienced person from a technology based peaceful community, are sent out onto the surface of a wasteland were the people from other Vaults that opened earlier than your own struggle to surface among mutants and radiation.
The game has a killer intro, and is a clever mixture of '40s polish over the futuristic harshness. Probably the best part of the game is the character progression, which is well managed and even fun.
The things that drag the game down are few, but significant. Firstly, the game is far too short. It can easily be played in a non-linear fashion, but there are just too few locations and quests to warrant this. Second, the fighting is well managed, except for 'sequencing'. For some reason, the designers wanted something to decide whose turn it was in combat, rather than just go around the circle in order. This means that sometimes your enemy can get to goes and taking you out before you even draw your weapon.
Thirdly and finally, the game is somewhat disorganised. Of course, I'm using Ultima VII as my benchmark, but the sidequests often don't feel right, and I wasn't sure whether I'd finished them or not. Basically, the quest interface was a little crude.
Fallout's shortcomings are the reasons why Fallout 2 is so much longer, so much more open ended, and so much more complex. I get the feeling that Fallout was really just a test for Fallout 2. But those of you who are thinking 'Great, I'll jump straight to number 2' don't, the story of Fallout 1 isn't something you want to miss out on.

A neat RPG/fighter game

Most RPGs you play on the computer are based in fantasy worlds like dungeons with monsters and elves and such, Fallout takes place in a dark and desolate future, you are a member of a 'vault' that has managed to avoid all of the damage caused by the wars and the bombs and the radiation. Unfortunately your vault has suffered a problem in its systems and your people will all die if you can't find a replacement part.

You can choose between playing a male or a female and get to pick your stats. The combat system is very well done as you get to take time between combat rounds and decide what you want to do instead of just randomly whacking at something and hoping you can pound your buttons faster than the computer's AI.

One thing that's interesting is that your actions in the game have consequences. Who you help and who you don't determine what happens in the future. You can also make friends and have a band of NPCs joining you as you progress along.

Although this wasn't the most spectatular RPG I've ever played, I also had few complaints besides some clunky times with being able to see where I was or occasions where the NPCs had boxed me into a room and it took some tricky manuvering to get my way out.

All in all I think Fallout is a good introduction game for those wanting to wet their feet in computer RPGs, and for more seasoned gamers they'll find it a unique story and something easy to hold interest in.

Great game with an outstanding plot

In my opinion i think this game is a very great game. What drawed me toward it at first was the realistic future storyline. The game itself is outstanding. I especially love the character creation which is very complex. The game is sort of like those old "chose your own adventure" books because you make the desions in here. You pick what lives or dies. If someones is talking trash and you don't like it then you don't have to take it.With multi-endings this game should keep you busy for a while. Is a great game for RPG fans as well as other gamers. The game maybe quite old but all the more reason to buy for a nice cheap price.

Best computer RPG ever. Period.

I like this game so much I've played it from start to finish about 5 times (and didn't even play it for the first time until 2003!). Fallout is about 8 years old at this point and it still ranks as the best computer RPG of all time. The atmosphere, storyline, and music are all excellent, and the graphics still look good to me. It's a crying shame there aren't more games like this. Forget fantasy and sci-fi RPGs -- let's see some more post-apocalypse scenarios. Fallout is far superior to anything else I've ever played, new or old. I'm glad I found it.

A quiet classic

When Fallout was released RPGs were in a slump. The Genre was dying. Then fallout was released, an unheralded first effort by three devoted designers. Fallout's post-apocalyptic setting was the first revolution. Before that almost all RPGs were in traditional fantasy settings with the notable exception of wasteland, the game that inspired fallout. Fallouts second great contribution to gaming in general (aside from its awesome gameplay, story, and atmosphere) was reviving the role-playing game along with the next year's might and magic 6 and baldur's gate. Fallout is an old school rpg yet is accessible to the newbies. Before playing it I had played no old school rpgs and now i have played several. Fallouts simple interface houses an addictive game and deep rpg system that will appeal to new comers and fans alike. At the great price amazon is offering there is no excuse to not own fallout.

Post-nuclear Experience

It is one of the few old games that I still play. Story line is incredibly good, the setting of the post nuclear war of drugs, radiation, adrenaline and max. pessimism of the post-nuclear world is incredible. You will be a vault dweller while playing the game, unifying with the character you created. I like fallout's graphic engine, still today, isometric and nice graphics. The only problem is the saving times but it wont cause that much trouble. If they release a Fallout 3, with the same sounds and graphics but with a better story line, i still buy it and rate it 5. One of the few RPGs of the past that we literally felt free to do anything. Play it, finish it and buy the Fallout 2 also.

Fallout is the official/unofficial sequel to the classic RPG Wasteland. I'm not finished with it yet, but I am having an absolute blast playing it. The action is non-linear, you can do just about anything you want.

Absolutely the best RPG out there!

I love RPG's, but always get fed up with some illogical puzzle or impossible to beat enemy and stop playing about 3/4 of the way through. This is the first I've ever finished. Very well balanced, and has replay value, as there are 3 paths you can take: fighter, thief, or diplomat. Unlike most games it is possible to finish the game (but not quite all quests) with any of these paths.

One very minor issue: On windows XP, the help screen and movies have the color all messed up so that it's hard to make out what's in them. Probably easily solved by changing some setting, but I never bothered trying.

If you like RPG's, but want some variety from the AD&D type world, don't miss this one!

Post-apocalyptic dark gothic role-playing with dark humor.

Set in the years following nuclear armageddon, you are one of the lucky few who made it to the safety of huge, underground vaults. Unfortunately, the water purification chip that you rely on to provide clean drinking water is failing, and you must venture into the strange new world to find a replacement. Mutants, murder, and mayhem come all too quickly. Can you find the chip for your home without losing your humanity, or succumbing to the radiation of the desert wastes? A most refreshing departure from the legions of elves and goblins, swords and sorcery commonly lumped into the RPG genre. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, and the mighty laser gatling gun! Immersive play, and a plot that keeps you twisting! Buy it! Do it Now!

THE GREATEST!
