Running game on xp

To all those who love the game but cannot get it to run on win xp...

Don't despair!

Thanks to Donna who worked this out:

"Here's what worked for me. I went into the cd folder and found
the INST16.exe file. I left clicked on it and selected properties. Then, I clicked on the compatibility tab. I
checked the following boxes: Run this program in compatibility mode for, Windows 95, Run in 256 colors. The
rest should be unchecked.
Now, after it installs, the icon on the desktop (or under Start, Programs) should be set as above except ALL the
boxes should be checked. WOOHOO!!!! Have fun!"

thanks, Donna ...

I have loved this game for years!!! I was so disappointed when I got my new PC that ran Windows XP. I couldn't figure out how to get it to run Chessmates. But if there's a will there's a way!

The best I've found for kids

I am a second grade teacher and love to get kids into playing chess. It's fun and has proven benefits for a students behavior and cognitive skills. I have used this program for 7 years (starting my 8th) worth of second graders and my own 5 children. They all have been able to easily follow the directions, understand the concepts and enjoyed Wanda's (The wizard's mischievious wand) antics. My only drawback is that it won't run in XP and I may soon have to find a new program to use. I won't gurantee that every child will fall in love with the game of chess, but any child having an inkling of ambition and desire will find this a fun tool to make the game their own.

I played this game when I was learning how to play chess. It helped me a lot. The wizard guy gives you hints and tips. Now, I like to play it because it is challenging. It has cool sound effects, too. You can play against a friend or the computer. I highly recommend you buy it.
