I enjoyed playing this game. The graphics are nicely done, enjoyed the action between crew members. Found switching between the B-17s and fighters a great change of pace while waiting for the bomber formation to reach it's target. The missions can be rather long, I found myself dozing off listening to the drone of the engines. You can speed up the pace abit, but, it may be me, the navigator seems to get lost after doing this. Wish that the 100th Bomb Group had been included in this game. I was in the 100th Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force in 1957 and had read the history of the Wing during WWI in England. Maybe an attachment later on? I did enjoy the game and will probably enjoy it more as time goes on. Recommended to those who want the challange of flying a B-17 to a target through flak and fighters.
B-17 is a great game!!!!

B-17 Flying Fortress is a good game for several reasons. It has great historical accuracy. It has real targets that were of importance to the 8th airforce at that time. Some of the game modes are:1) Bomber campaign. In this, you command a B-17, and 10 men who flew it. It has a file containing everything about every crew member. 2) Squaderon campaign. In this you command a squaderon of B-17s. You pick targets, pick the planes that go on the mission, pick ordanance, change waypoints, and assign recon missions. There are all the targets on the map in Germany and France, and you pick 3. They are Primary, secondary, and tertiary. Everything about each individual plane is the same. 3) Historical mission. Fly 6 historical missions in WWII. 4)Quickstart missions. Fly 6 missions ranging from landing a crippled B-17, to shooting down P-51s in an Fw-190. 5) Training missions. Fly 6 training missions including Taxi and takeoff, approach and landing,feathering/restarting an engine, bombing:good conditions, bombing:poor conditions, and gunnery training. As far as technical information, it is exact! The cockpits are exact, I know because I have a book with photos of all the cockpits of all the planes you can fly, plus I've been in a B-17. You can fly the following: B-17, P-51, P-47, P-38, Me 109, Fw 190 and the Me 262 jet. The rest of the B-17 is accurate too. The game also goes into detail with the Norden bombsight. The graphics are impressive! Overall this game is great, and I highly recommend it! It's worth the investment.
An opportunity wasted

The very premise of this game is one that I have been anxiously awaiting for years. This execution of the concept, however, is simply terrible.
Microprose has not yet learned that simple eye candy is not enough to sustain an interesting, challenging gaming experience. Playability is clumsy at best and interrupts any sense of excitement, challenge, or suspense. My version was also laden with bugs and I found it to be highly unstable, despite my 900mhz processor, ample memory, and video card.
Anyone who has experienced the highly realistic flight dynamics of the MS Flight Sim family, Fly!, or any of the Jane's programs will find the characteristics of this B-17 overly simplified, unrewarding, and childlike.
Buy MS Combat Flight Sim 2 and download one of the many fine handpainted B-17 add-ons available as freeware out there. Better still, if you can't shake the urge to the fly a B-17, put down your computer and pick up some Steven Ambrose -- the images he paints are 1,000 times better than Microprose.
Calling this game B-17 is an insult to a noble aircraft.

Forget Rowan's 'Battle of Britain' and Microsoft's latest effort. B17 is undoubtedly the best WW2 aerial combat sim that has ever been produced to date and works a treat with my 1000 MHz processor. The graphics are exemplary, and the attention to detail awesome. Infact I can't praise Microprose / Hasbro Interactive too lavishly for their ambitious attempt to portray the heroism and sacrifice of the US 8th Airforce during the daylight bomber offensive against Nazi Germany 1943 -1945. The atmosphere in B17 is astounding, the flak from below and the cannon rounds from attacking German FW 190s, BF 109s and ME 262s are absolutely real. So too is the general damage modelling, the photographic realism of exploding aircraft and the desire you have as a US airman to do your duty. My very few gripes include the fact that the ground looks too green at 25,000 ft and waves should be invisible over the English Channel and North Sea. Minor gripes indeed. I look forward in due course to a sim of this calibre being devoted to the greatest bomber of the war, the Avro Lancaster with all of the marauding hun night fighters, searchlights, T.I.s ( target indicators) and RAF banter included. For goodness sake please make it as realistic and detailed as B17 or else I won't buy it! ...

Well I received this title over the weekend, and still have not been able to get it off the ground.
This is what I am having problems with and have encountered getting technical support (a nightmare!!).
Game Problems:
1. Going to 'instant action' from the main game menu, I am presented with a CTD (Crash To Desktop), which means the game crashes, and your back at your desktop.
2. In The game, you need to review crew status, mission briefings ,etc. well so far I can not view these, do to they don't appear while in the game.
Applied the latest patch (v1.06) to correct allot of the bugs and CTD, and still have the above problems.
Now the Nightmare!:
* Web Sites mentioned, do not work - Either receive a blank page, 404 Not Found, or Virtual Directory: Access denied error.
* Phone Support - They have changed their number already from the one in the manual. Called the new number, and was thrown into a loop from a dysfunctional automated phone system. And then finally was told I was in a 60 minute call waiting queue.
* E-Mail support - Received an auto response saying their e-mail address is no longer valid. I was then pointed to a new web site which pointed me back to the original Hasbro Interactive Dysfunctional web site.
So I am preparing to send this piece of junk back for a refund. This is the LAST Hasbro/Micrprose software that I buy.
Forget it

My computer exceeds the requirements listed on the package (PII with 500 MHZ, 128 RAM), however the system crashes each time I launch it. Trying to contact customer support in a manner is litterally impossible. Frustration is high with this product and this company. They sell something that they misrepresented (i.e. system requirements) and provide substandard support to assist you. DO NOT PURCHASE!

Any one who purchased Falcon 4.0 can attest to the problems that came with Microprose/Hasbro pulling the plug on the support and patches for what was supposed to be their newest title. Many Falcon 4.0 fans were left with a good flightsim, but the problems and bugs kept many from playing it. A company called IBeta and a large user community turned this sim around and made it playable and more realistic. While I am not against Hasbro, I am not there biggest supporter. It took almost 2 years to turn the sim into what MOST of the users bought if for in the first place. Although it was very playable and looked great out of the box, it did not live up to the hype or play the way MOST people wanted it to. Before purchasing this title, look around on the net for previous titles made by the developers/distributors. There are several reviews from Europe also. Check out messages posted in message boards about this game. Keep in mind that the pre-Xmas price will go down in a couple of months. If you feel that you are a die hard sim fan that can't wait to get a good B-17 simulator, go for it. Otherwise monitor the web. The price will go down sooner or later and once the gaming community gets hold of the product in North America, many reviews will be posted and the message boards will be full. You can then make an accurate decision on whether you want to spend the money on this title. Although Hasbro/Microprose might have changed the way they do business and support, I for one am going to wait this out. This is just my opinion...

When I frist saw this game i thought wow, i've always wanted something like this. When i first started it the opening movie was really cool and i could tell that those grpahics were out of the game itself. When i played one of the training misisons i was in the seat of the pilot. Wow! Then in another training mission i could be any of the gunners. Wow! This is one great game. You can plan missions, command missions and be any person in your squadron. Though this system requires a lot of memory it played great on my 2 year old computer. It worked fine without the patch. If you took care of your computer it will do fine and wont crash. Great Game, 10 out of 10, hope they make a game where your a lufwaffe pilot going up against this monster of a battle they fought over germany. {But you can control German Pilots in this game}
Simply the best!!

This game has everything for people who like WWII flight sims. Fly German or American planes in countless missions. Send out recon missions for film and info about the next target. Then plan out the mission from which target to target and what the altitude should be for each way point. Be aware of flak though, one good direct hit and the 17 is done (personal expierence). The realism of this game is incredible. If the formation makes it back to base check the casualty list. See who made it home or not and then prepare for the next mission. This is the closest thing to being in 17 than actually being in one. In three words, simply the best.
