Pretty Star Wars sim, but somehow stale!

So the game has everything it needs, good graphics, a reasonable story and the traditional lucas sounds and music. All this should make for a Star Wars flight fest yet oddly it doesn't. Perhaps it is the pacing of the game, the control system or the lack of familiarity with the characters that does it, but playing the game feels more like something you have to do than something you really want to. Of course you will continue playing the game in the hope that things get better later in the game.
Better than the PS2 versions - certainly, but while this is a must for Star Wars fans, it is probably better rented for everyone else.
Lets hope that Jedi Starfighter is better!
Must-have for the Star Wars fan

This special edition of Star Wars Starfighter adds some nicely done bells and whistles to the original PS2 release (can't remember when that one came out, maybe a year ago?), including better graphics, tighter gameplay, new levels, etc. You play as one of three pilots and blast your way in your spaceship to the final confrontation.
Everything from the Star Wars world is in the game, in both graphics and sounds. It's an immersing experience and one you don't want to put down until you are down. (Warning, though: if you are like me you'll get motion-sick quickly so it's better to take breaks! Still, the game is worth it.)
One thing on my wish list is for the graphics to be even better. I don't think the game right now takes full advantage of the Xbox's processing power. That's a pity.
A near miss.

I've been playing PC-based Star Wars flights sims since the very first X-Wing back in 1994. So with my brand-new X-Box, I was looking forward to some seriously improved graphics and gameplay a bit more lighthearted than for the PC.
I got what I wanted -- and less.
There's one HUGE problem with this game. Your right thumbstick controls your rolls. But the buttons under your right thumb control your firing. So how the heck are you supposed to maneuver and fire at the same time? I'm about to give up.
Not really special

Whats so special about this game? Well, nothing really. Its not bad. I mean I really liked the PS2 edition. I was really hoping they would improve on the Xbox version alot and they, uh, didn't. It's fun with good graphics and controls though. If you own the original then you might want to just skip this one. If not then go ahead and buy it.
The sequel is almost to market: wait for it

Honestly, unless you're LucasArts completist collector, there's no longer any reason to buy this game. With the pending sequel, JEDI STARFIGHTER, many of the things that annoyed people about STARFIGHTER SE (like its highly inadequate multiplayer environment) are going to be addressed--and, we hope, resolved. GIve this one a miss.

I am not a 5 hour a day gamer, I simply enjoy these when I can.
Star Wars Starfighter SE is a fantastic game. I have gone through half the levels and it keeps getting better. The various situations for each level, make the game new and fresh. That is, first you are in a canyon, then space, then you must escort a pirate ships etc.
The only part of the game I don't like, is the same with most games; there is very little instruction included, and not being a gamer, it takes a while to figure it out. It is however well worth the money.
...--this game is horrible!!

This game isn't good at all. After getting my XBOX, I found I really liked playing Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II on my friend's Nintendo's Gamecube. That had great (and familiar) graphics, fantastic action gameplay, and a good score. This game, however, is just the opposite, with the exception of the graphics. And while the graphics are decent (as they should be given that this is the XBOX), they aren't as good as in Rogue Squadron II, and they're certainly not enough to compensate for the lousy gameplay and annoying score
First, the gameplay is absolutely horrible, with the exception of the first board in which you are flying through a cavern, which is somewhat fun for only a little while, until you get out of the cavern. Basically, there really is no 'flying'. Yes, you are supposedly flying, but it pretty much always feels like you are simply suspended and can only rotate your view from one point in the air. This awful perspective is even more pronounced when you are in space and there aren't as many visual points of reference (to at least maintain the pretense that you're actually moving forward and not suspended in one point of the air). Shooting down enemy fighters isn't fun and doesn't seem like it would be realistic, especially since, again, it's all about adjusting your view rotationally (as if you were suspended in the center of a sphere looking outward) and not about moving forward or accelarating, even though you are supposedly doing these things. Furthermore, your thumb gets tired after so much rotational adjusting to get your enemies in sight. And it's not the type of tired that is fun either. Lastly, with the freighters in space, it's very frustrating, because all you do is slow down so you don't crash into them (i.e., your feeling of being suspended in one point is even more pronounced) and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot some more; basically you shoot ad infinitum until they blow up. For these reasons and more, the gameplay is horrible.
Beyond the gameplay, there are other things that detract from this game. The plot isn't well defined at all. Sometimes it seems that all you do is go around, from level to level, shooting aimlessly (of course it wouldn't feel so aimless if there was better gameplay). The levels are most of the time confusing in their objectives and visual appearance, as are the characters, ships, and enemies (especially, I guess, if you are like me and haven't read any of the post-Return of the Jedi science fiction that's out there. But you shouldn't have to in order to enjoy a game like this.) The objectives, and especially the 'bonus goals' for each level, are often too difficult, even on the 'Easy' level.
Finally are the little things. The score is annoying, much worse than on any other XBOX game I own. The character Nim is as annoyingly bad for this videogame as Jar Jar Binks was for The Phantom Menace movie. There's probably some other stuff that I'm leaving out as well. THE BOTTOM LINE IS: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GAME. I now own about nine or ten XBOX games, and this is by far the one I dislike the most. ...
The first really bad XBOX game

Yes, I actually have bought and played this game, and it's awful. The gameplay and controls are difficult, the flight physics are a joke. You can actually fly into walls several times and come out okay. The graphics are about what I'd expect two or three years ago. If this is the updated Xbox version, I feel very sorry for the PS2 people. On top of all this, the level design and story [disappoint]. Don't waste your money. ANY other fighter game would be better.

This game is alright but once you beat it it gets kind of old. The bonus levels are a cool addition to the XBOX version of the game but the multiplayer modes/levels are not that various and are not as fun as expected. If you are a star wars fan it is worth renting before you buy it. I would have still gotten it if I played it before I bought it I GUESS.
Good Graphics.
