Good game

This really is a good game, and to all of you ignorant people that rated it without even BUYING the game because it contains Starforce, you really missed out. Installing Starforce is OPTIONAL. Thousands of people are already playing it fine, Starforce free.

I'm not exactly sure what everyone else was talking about. The whole star force thing kind of confuses me. I have been playing the game for about three months and I am yet to have any problems with my computer. so if you are interested in the game don't let the hype about starforce software scare you out of buying it.

Great Game

I am a big fan of the Uncharted Waters series that was on the SNES. Koei has been making new ones but never releasing them in the US. Anyway, When I first heard that Pirates of the Caribbean was like it in a way and not related to the movie I decided to buy it and loved it despite the many bugs....just had to save a lot. Then i purchased Sea Dogs and now Age of Pirates which is along the same lines, a sequel of sorts. Its a great game although so far not as good as POTC because at least that game gave you some direction in the beginning. So far in this one I am just doing "missions" to earn money, like transporting people to and from islands. The graphics are a little better than Sea Dogs and POTC. I have yet to have the game crash, just got it yesterday and played it for hours. I did install the latest 1.5 version patch before playing it for the first time though. I also just loaded the StarForce free patch which allows you to uninstall StarForce and play the game without it on your system. Too many bad reviews made me think twice about leaving it on. Shouldn't judge the game solely on the fact that it has anti-piracy software on it. So if you liked POTC and Sea Dogs you will like this game. Although I liked POTC better, I have completed that already and its nice to have something along the same lines with new missions and things added. Akella should try expansions on games rather than creating all new ones, like they aren't doing by creating another Age of Pirates: Captain Blood which i believe is a stand alone game.

One of the Best Pirate Games out there -- Rivals Sid Meiers Pirates

Ok... First I would like to start by saying YOU WONT LIKE THIS GAME UNLESS YOU DOWNLOAD PATCH AND FIX THE BUGS... Yes, people are right, this game was release way before it should have been....

BUT... THAT BEING SAID, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PIRATE GAMES OF ALL TIME!!!!, and I have most of them (pirates gold!, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sea Dogs, Sid Meiers Pirates, cutthroats, etc.) It also takes a while to learn the controls, but once oyu've got them down this game is lots of fun... You have the ability to recuit a crew, additional officers to fight along side you as you board enemy ships, you can reward your officers and give them ships to create your own fleet.. and the naval battles are amazing. You actually get to stand on the deck of your ship (which you cna move around, and each ship model is different)

Great game over all and once you have the update, I think you'll enjoy it...

No Problem

I don't know why some people have a problem with Starforce. I have never had a problem well running a game with Starforce. Age of Pirates is a good in depth game.
A lot better then Sids Pirate remake. It would be nice if Amazon would list in the product information if a program is using Starforce for those who do have a problem with it.

Very good pirate life game but very buggy!

This game promises to be a lot of fun.
But it is really buggy. It crashes often, even with the latest patches. This makes it really annoying. You have to save all the time so you don't lose your progress in the game.
I have only played a few hours so I don't know how the story really progresses. I hope it is as good as the Pirates of the Caribbean.
The style of the game is very similar, if not identical to Pirates of the Caribbean.

All in all it looks like a fun game. Maybe released a little early. It needed a little more beta testing so it wouldn't have so many bugs.

Entertaining and NOT AS REVIEWED by others here.

(Review provided by my son, as the game was purchased for him.)

I have been playing Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales for all week now. I haven't really done any of the "main quest" stuff until just today, mostly spent "free time" trading, battling, exploring, etc..

I rate the FUN LEVEL incredibly high, due to it being quite entertaining. I normally don't play much in the way of strategy style games, but you definately need to understand strategy to advance very far. Not saying a teenager wouldn't figure it out, just that it's abit more involved than a FPS style game.

OVERALL SCORE is only lower than 5 stars because the main storyline is alittle too limited in content in my opinion. Sure, it takes some game-time to complete, and you won't be able to "beat the game" in a single day (atleast not easily), but I wish for the level of graphics and the fact that the map spans such a wide region, that it had more content than what it did. Still, the freedom to do what you want if you want to, definately makes up for that lacking.

I have read many of the reviews posted by others, complaining of needing a patch to play, or bashing "Starforce" in general. I have been playing this game for SEVERAL DAYS, have not patched it in any way, and I don't have the most currently up-to-date setup on my PC. I've also experienced none of the supposedly commonplace problems associated with "Starforce" copy-protection software. My installation has not resulted so far in any crashes I can blame on the game software. The only crash I have experienced was a tempermental issue with my anti-virus. It causes crashes to desktop sometimes in many of my games when it runs it's update, so this is unrelated to the game.

I am finding alot of what seem to be "errors" in the other reviews made on this title. It works fine for me. I may eventually install the patch just to see if there's any change, or a "mod" when I get bored with the scenery, but I don't imagine I'll be bored with this game anytime soon.

All in all, great game, great fun, don't believe MOST of the negative reviews you'll find on here. I've noticed alot of contrasting negative reviews that differ completely from my own experiences once I played the games myself. Can't say why that is, but please give games a try. Taste and gameplay choice varies, afterall.

An allright game

Remarks on Starforce or whatever you wanna call it. If its there I dont have a problem with it. My computer is three years old, 2.7 GHz, 1 G Ram, NVidia 6600 and I have no problems. Graphics are decent, but the sound effects can be rather distorted and choppy (except the battle sounds, they are clear). There are a lot of missing elements missing as stated in some other comments (the Bank, certain houses, etc). There is a map, if you press the M key as the options states you get a map so I dont know what game the one reviewer was complaining about. Controls are rather easy as well, you go to the options screen and set up what you want to use for directional movement (arrow keys, WSDA, etc) WOOOOOOO! not that hard. But gameplay although fun does get boring, it seems all you do is buy/sell stuff, fight sea battles, and board ships and sword fight. It gets old and tedious, nothing new. The missions are boring and repetitive (pick up Joe Smoe and take him here). The game does have a problem of crashing at least once an hour, I have expererienced this a couple times in ten minutes, also save games do get corrupted but the fix is to load that corrupted game and immediatly keep saving. You might have to do this a few times but it seems to correct the corruption, especially useful if you havent saved in awhile. The AI is rather stupid as all the Captains that you employ seem to be unable to guide ships no matter what their skill level (mine seem to like running aground or into each other a lot). Enemy Captains are just as dum. This game is buggy and although well concieved it could have been way better, looks like the developer was trying to ride the "Pirates of the CA" movie hype as stated in another comment. BAD BAD BAD on the developer, if this were a car you would be sued for putting out such a product. Overall game is allright to play and gets tedious, but expect saving problems and crashes.

Controls need remapping

The over all freedom and story line during the game is good. But the controls are jumbled and placed randomly. The game takes to long to get used to unless you have a gaming keyboard.

It's your call.

Well, the good and the bad things about the game pretty much balance out. Let's start with the good things first though. The game is deep into the naval genre, and can keep you entertained for hours. Theres always another mission to do and another ship to sink. You can choose to serve Spain, England, France, Holland, Dutch, or be a plain old pirate. Taking colonies for yourself is very fun and challenging, as all nations become agressive to you, if you can manage to take the fort, which will usually decimate your fleet if you're not prepared. Now, the bad things. This game is very buggy, so much that I would not buy it unless you were going to download the patches. There are frequent crashes to the desktop, game freezes, and so many bugs it's not even funny. If you have a Radeon 9200 graphics card, you MUST download the patches, because it will not work on most Radeon cards without them. And the game uses Starforce, a stupid copy protection program that buries itself into the dark corners of your pc. Even if you uninstall the game, some bits of Starforce will remain, and if you don't eliminate them, they will cause driver failures, hard drive failures, basically make your computer life a living hell. I uninstalled my game because of Starforce, which was already screwing up my pc. So, if you feel like putting up with those major headaches, then I would buy the game.
