I am a former real life owner and driver of an open wheel sprint car. I raced for about 5 years, destroyed my car several times, won a few, lost a few. This game is as real as it gets without giving your left arm to own one of these real cars. Set ups are fairly compatible, track conditions are very realistic including the change from a tacky/moist track to a dry slick track! Even the view from the cockpit is realistic, get this game, you will be hooked!

I had a chance to see and play the game [in] August (2001) and was very impressed with the quality of screens and action. Those who may own the PC version will see many advances in the game on PS2 and will want to have the PS2 version. Drop the [money] on a PS2 system and spend all your waking hours racing.
They improved on making the tracks more realistic (including billboards, landmarks etc.) and the handling of the cars to change as the dirt tracks change, making you the driver constantly searching for the fastest line around the race track. Sound was excellent, graphics were clean and not jerky. I was impressed with the addition of the tear-off option just like if you were actually racing. Mud clouds the vision as you follow other racers and by hitting the tear-off button you have a clear screen again.
I'm sure the delays in the release have to due with the many changes in sponsorship and additional features one can add with the PS2 system.
I don't think you will find a better racing game for the price. If you're a fan of sprint cars or dirt racing you will have a great time with this game.

I remember when the first Gran Turismo came out. The feel and control was like nothing I had experienced on a console racer before. And by the way I only buy racing games. No football, no boxing, no shoot-um-ups, no RPG's for me. None of these offers the adreneline rush of an awesome racing game. World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002 is one of those games. One of those games that push the envelope called realism to the extreme. When I first nailed it coming out of a corner and felt the front end actually lift, I was stunned. The physics and control of this game is the very best yet. And I've raced a ton of games on PS1 and PS2. Nothing touches this. Not even close. Thought GT3 was the ultimate? Wrong my friend. The AI in GT3 are absolute idiots compared to the AI in WoO. They are relentless. Venture into Outlaw mode and you will find the truth there. And this game has far and away the best Arcade mode yet in a racer. Hands down. And the graphics are gorgeous. Awesome track lighting and the most lovely skies yet seen. The progression from evening practice to the night's A Main is rendered like never before. And to top it off, this game is only [amount]. If you are a true racer like myself, go buy this ASAP. I bet them guys over at Polyphony Digital are playing this game as we speak, in awe of Ratbag's dirt track masterpiece.
An Excellent Game Even for Those Unfamiliar with Sprint Cars

I knew nothing about sprint car racing when I purchased this game. From seeing an occasional highlights segment on Speed News or RPM Tonight, a few of the driver names sounded slightly familiar, but I was extremely surprised when, in reading through the excellent game manual, I learned that the right rear tire is larger than its left-side counterpart. However, despite my extreme ignorance of sprint car racing, the first thirty minutes with the game sold me on this form of racing.
While the array of tuning options can feel threatening initially (and also seems to run counter to tuning options in games such as Gran Turismo 3 and F1 2001, two games which place a HEAVY emphasis on tuning), the basics are well explained in the game manual, with brief tips on-screen in the tuning menu. After a few runs through Single Race and Time Trial to become accustomed to driving a sprint car and learning a few circuits, anyone can have fairly quick success in Arcade Mode; success is initially rather rare in Career Mode, so concentrating in Arcade Mode for several days first is definitely advisable.
One common complaint players often have is the loading time required in various games. Fortunately, World of Outlaws has one of the FASTEST loading times I have encountered in a racing game - in my experience, only F1 2001 is faster, but only by less than a second on average.
Beginning in Career Mode is even more frustrating than starting in the Gran Turismo series :-( At least in the Gran Turismo series, there is a fairly wide variety of cars to choose from to begin a game. Career Mode in World of Outlaws, however, only provides two choices of sprint cars for the beginning racer. Of the initial $12,000, the cheapest car will consume $9,000, leaving fairly little money for upgrades or repairs.
No matter where a competition is held, all these tracks are rather TIGHT. This is nothing like CART or F1 or ALMS, where cars can easily spread out quickly. In this game, even the 'long' tracks are extremely short, which means that - except for those starting a race from the front row - every car is always involved with traffic on every lap.
One important note: World of Outlaws REQUIRES a DualShock2 controller. I use a MadCatz DualForce controller (designed for the original PlayStation) for all my other racing games due to the better grip of the controller, but WOO does not support PSX/PSOne controllers. Third-party controllers designed for the PlayStation2 may also work with World of Outlaws, but I have not had the opportunity to test any of them with this game.
Without question, World of Outlaws is one of the hidden gems of the racing genre for PlayStation2 :-)
The Greatest Show on Dirt, well on a PS2 anyway

Ok, my recommendation is both if you love racing games and if you love Dirt Track pick this up. Its made by RatBag games who have put out many Dirt Track titles on the computer that are known as simply the best. This installment for the PS2 is the World of Outlaw Sprint series. This racing is some of the most exciting ever on dirt and this game picks up all of it. It has ultra realistic features in that you can tune your car, effects that the wing has on acceleration and steering, pitch, ride height, wheel stagger, etc etc. Also, if you don't know the specifics its ok, on easy mode anyone can pick up the tricks easily. Also you have the ability to play as some of the OUtlaw greats and unlock more tracks as you go on. This is a definite MUST BUY for any racing fan.
This is the BEST RACE GAME EVER

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines, And Step Hard on the Loud Pedal!!!As a big fan of sprint car racing, this is a breath of fresh air for the Playstation 2. This game is one of the best racing games I have ever played. The track changes from start to finish, you get mud on you screen and have to use tear-offs to see again, and there is always a chance of the driver in front of you wrecking and taking you out. I also like the fact that they have alot of the current race driver and also remember one of the great one with the 93 Ammaco sprinter for Kevin Gobrecht. The tracks are very realistic down to the half letters at Bristol and the detail like the crowd and off-track things are very sharp. I also like the description they give at the begining of each race, like when you race at Williams Grove, they tell you about the track and about the PA Posse and how it is some of the toughest local driver's the Outlaws face. I have this game for the computer as well and I think the one for Playstation is far better. If you like any type of racing, this game is for you!! And remember this, real men race in the Dirt!!!
This game is awesome
