An under-appreciated classic

Moonbase is a turn-based strategy game in which you build a city out of a network of moon-pods in an attempt to wrestle control of a planet away from opponents with identical capabilities. The network is a directed tree; destruction of pods higher up the tree (i.e. closer to your home base) causes you to lose pods that were launched from the destroyed pod. The game features a very clever assortment of weapons and tools that lead to some subtle strategy interactions. There's a small scorched-earth element in that pods are deployed using a virtual-golf-style power meter and are affected by wind as they arc over the planet's surface to settle into their new position. The game also has online multiplayer; it's a great game to play with three of your friends.

Overall, this game is well worth the experience, especially at these prices. If you've never played it, do yourself a favor and try it out.

Simple but challenging logic game

Don't be fooled into thinking this is some kind of strategic war or economic game. It's strategy in about the same sense that chess is, but with a certain amount of hand-to-eye coordination thrown in. This is really about trying to build up a moonbase on step at a time, while at the same time blocking the other guy's...and preventing him from blocking yours. Each turn, you pick something you want to build, and then "fling" it in the appropriate direction. You might fling something toward an energy pool to build up your energy, or you might fling out a shield to keep the other guy from attack your base.

But again, this is not like, for instance, Outpost, if you're familiar with that game. This is really just a fairly simple logic game. Simple in the sense that there is only a very limited range of things you can do. But the game can be quite challenging. The computer is very sneaky and will send in stuff to blow up your base and defeat you unless you keep a very sharp eye on him.

I bought this used at a low price, and it was definitely a good value. I've played it maybe three or four hours, which makes it already worth the price.

Keep in mind that the game requires a surprisingly huge amount of disk space to install, considering how simple it is. I don't remember offhand, but I think it was around 200 MB.

Brilliant Game

This game is brilliant. A finely balanced set of units/weapons, terrain editor, team or free-for-all multiplayer games, clean (though simple) graphics, good sound, and IMMENSE depth of gameplay. We've been playing this multiplayer for almost a year now, and we're still not bored. Most games last around 30 minutes, with occasional hour-and-a-half games and the very sporadic 2-hour-or-more game. As a hardcore Starcraft, Warcraft 3, and Master of Orion 2 player, I'm not raving about this out of lack of experience with this type of game. It's just a solid game design. My gripe is that you can't save games and restart later. After a marathon 2 1/2 hour game on a huge map, we had to call it quits because it was 3 in the morning!

Simple game, simple graphics, misnomer name.

This game has 1. nothing to do with the moon. 2. nothing to do with a base.
You essentially play a 2 angle game. 1. decide what to build (some strategy involved) 2. GUESS at how to aim. That's it. It's not even as fun as the OLD freeware scorched earth. Get that instead.

Is this a find for the blind!

I just bought moonbase commander last weekend and it definitely broke my heart. Its gameplay 100% weird and the graphics is 3d Cartoon! Dislikes:
1. You can choose weapons like missiles, mines etc. and using it would take you minutes to figure it out. You'd rather blow up your base first than the enemy coz the missiles just crazily hit your base! You have Towers that provide no defense but a mirror for a missile! Believe me this game is goners!
You can choose between 3 teams that is simply alike and the terrain makes me vomit!...

Its a shooting game in the moon which is crazily uncool!
You can choose 3 teams which absolutely [not good]!
Its graphics is cartooned 3d which is worse!
Its detail suck which gets you minutes to get used to the weird game!
I can't believe many people over rated this game when this game is not even better than supermario maybe theyre still using windows 95!
Just dont forget id rather buy nothing than to buy this!

I won't go into detail about gameplay. Others have done a fine job already. I would just like to say this is [great] for the money. The strategy, the graphics, the replay factor. This is an awesome game and a very well kept secret!

Superb "Computer-enabled boardgame"

All right: Moonbase Commander is sort of a cross between Scorched Earth and, say, Command and Conquer, with a touch of a golf sim's reflex and risk factors thrown into the shots. It sounds like a simple combination, and a lot of reviewers treated this game as an offshoot of established "strategy" wargame genres. It's not.

MBC, to me, is essentially a boardgame - one that could never exist outside a computer. The units in the game are tied to "realistic" concepts for ease of use: bombs, force fields, buildings...However, their behavior and interactions with each other are highly abstract and tremendously deep. The nature of an opponent's defenses and attacks is intuitively clear. The trick lies in figuring out the weak point. The simple, abstract design and the purity of the mental contest feels somewhat like chess, but even more like the Oriental game of Go, with its focus on group strength, territory, connections, and "vital points."

In any case, like a boardgame, the single player's nothing but a training ground. The multiplayer, however, has devoured WEEKS of my and my buddies' lives. 6 months after I bought it, we haven't stopped playing. In 10 years of gaming, this is the only one that has kept me up until sunrise. If you have a friend to play against, there is absolutely no better bargain in the world.

Game Candy- so sweet to eat!

Is this game Japanese? The art has the look, and some of the names of the computer players have that Godzilla-type sound to them. But these are good things! It really seperates the game from others on the market. If you want to try a different and deceptively simple game with an ancient Amiga-ish feel to it, give this game a spin. You won`t be disappointed.
