Okay, I just picked this game up last night and I've only been through the first three missions, but I've been somewhat impressed with it so far. It has an interesting mix of turn-based strategy games and an interactive real-time combat game. One thing I'd like to see different, though is that while in the real-time combat mode, you can only move forward, backward, or stand still. No sideways movement is allowed, so you can't try to move to an enemy's flanks, take cover behind buildings or terrain, or otherwise outmaneuver your opponent. Basically all you can affect is range, so it's blast or be blasted.

I like the way they implemented the supporting troops for each unit. So far, they haven't proved terribly useful, but it's still early in my game. They add a little more realism to the combat scenes, which brings me to the next point...

The general plot of the game seems a bit, well, silly. The game supposedly takes place in 1964 and is supposed to reflect an alternate history that pivoted on some historical events that actually did occur. Basically, the story goes something like this. During WWII, the Germans invented a giant robot for use in battle on most any terrain. Kinda like a BattleMech for you Battletech/MechWarrior fans out there. So during WWII, supposedly the Germans shared some of this technology with Japan. After WWII ends in 1945, the Japanese are unhappy with the results of the Potsdam Conference and a civil war broke out ca. 1950 between northern and southern Japan. Somewhere along the line, Russia got involved in the war and has claimed the very northern part of Japan as part of its territory. You are a half German, half Japanese guy that is a test pilot of one of these robots for South Japan. A North spy named Kaiho sneaks in and steals a new prototype robot during a training session and gets away. Your job is to get it back by commanding an army of units to track down Kaiho and destroy him.

This story would be a little more believable if it was set sometime in the future, but as it is, it just seems kind of ridiculous because of the technology it would require for the time period. You soon forget about that once you get into the game, though, and I've found it to be very enjoyable so far. The graphics for most of the game aren't outstanding, but they are functional. This game could have easily been done on the PSone rather than the PS2, but it doesn't really bother me all that much. It doesn't really make the game any less good. This game may be a rent-before-you-buy kind of a deal for most people, though.

Oh, and one last thing. Some of the translation was done kind of poorly, hence the title of this review... Not nearly as bad as ZeroWing, but not great either.

This game carries on after WW II. When you play you control army men and ROBOTS. Yep, You heard ROBOTS any person who likes Mech Warrior and those games, get this. Overall the graphics are very sharp and clear. When it comes to detail for the army men uuuuuuuuummmmm its ok. Not great. The special effects are great for example explosions. The game is a reall challenge. Pure stratergy. I would buy it if you have a chance.

This game is challenging and takes a while to play. Fun game though. I didn't know what to expect when I picked this game up but it suprised me. Strategy is what this game is all about and it gets a little frustrating in some parts. But that is what a strategy game is all about :-). Pick this one up if you feel like being challenged and have the money.

This is a great game. It takes a while to learn the basic gameplay and battle sequences. But once you do, the game becomes fun and pretty addictive. There are a ton of missions and chapters, so you'll have many hours of gameplay waiting for you. The story is interesting, the graphics and nice, and the sound is great. Buy this if you love strategy games and hours and hours of interesting gameplay.

Mechwarrior fans will lover Ring of Red because it is very closely related to the game. Ring of Red is a story about WW2 not ending with the bombing of Japan. The war dragged on and brought in a new style of combat that involved Mechs. The gameplay learning curve takes a while to master. Once you identify which mechs and squads to match up against oppossing enemy then it becomes very fun. However one thing about this game is that they seemed to cut some elements of the game that should have been there. For example voice-overs, the game could have used voice-overs! And they could have used animations thru the breifing stages and small cutscenes. But the game is still fun but reading thru all the dialogue makes me feel like im in front of my old Playstation again. But all in all its a great game that may have been rushed to fatten the game market for PS2.

A great alternate history

Well this game has a couple a outstanding attributes first off the graphics. The battle scenes are very immersive the view of the shells hitting the A.F.W.'s (armored fighting walkers) is amazing it actually feels like your watching a documentary of sorts, The entire sequence of the battle scenes (including the cut scenes) are done very well, they remind me alot of the magic and summon's scenes of final fantasy 7 and 8. Another good attribute is the sound, The music is not 5 star but a solid 4. The sound effects are definately a 5. The pressure of time is another good yet frustating attribute, You have to wait for your loaders to load the rounds and it is very nerve racking because you know that your opponent is about to fire, he is just waiting for his accuracy to increase and so are you, plus you also have a time limit to finish your battles. Finally the storyline is great. its amazing to see how this history started and how it unfolds. overall this is a solid strategey game there are alot of factors to consider before your battles so choose your crews carefully.

Awesome Game!

To start this off, I had my doubts about this game, BUT I trusted a friend enough to give it a shot. This is a fun game for ages 13 and up. The gameplay is "turned based" kinda like a RPG (Role Playing game) HEY don't go away yet if you don't likr RPG's you still might like this game. It reminded me of Chess in a way because you had to move each character on a "board map" and you battle the enemy. Instead of knights and Kings you have AFW's and Anti-AFW's (Mechs, or big robots) and they have troops to help you fight in the battle. You basically wait for you cannon to load then aim and fire.(I know sounds simple) but inbetween then you have to keep your soldiers alive from enemy fire make sure your AFW gets repaired and you need to watch your ammo. You have a good assortment of AFW's each with a different driver and "special moves" i.e. Emergency Load (you load your shells and fire instantly. all and all this is a great game it would be a 5 star game but to me the graphics could of been better (come on Konami you can do better) the soldiers were a little stiff and the mechs weren't an eye catcher but it's clean and sharp.

want a game to keep you busy for a while? then get the SLEEPER HIT OF 2001 for PS2-RoR(Ring of Red)

This game is pretty good, if u like mechwarrior or srategy games. The game has decent grahpics and is worth buying. The only thing dissapointing about this game is the format. The game should of let you be more people besides the Mech, or robot. the game should of let you be the infantry, or rocket launchers. Then i would of gave the game five stars. All in all its a pretty good game and it has a good story to it.

Average at best

I think there's so few games on the PS2 that even releases of average quality can appear at first to be high quality as you have nothing to compare them to... Ring of Red is an example of this.

Sure it's pretty and has some nice ideas - but this is not a replacement for classic mech games such as Front Mission 3. There are some interesting additions such as the soldiers but very frequently missions become extremely repetitive - there isn't enough variety to keep you coming - at it's heart it's a very simplistic strategy game which drags out R..E..A...L...L...Y S....L...O...W...L...Y thanks to the 'innovative' realtime combat system (which you can't even pause if you need to go and do something!).

Sure you've bought a PS2 and your desperate for something to play on it - but hold out a bit longer - there must be some good stuff on the horizon?! ;-) Musn't there?

In the meanwhile get your copy of SSX and boot it back up - much better!
