I am baffled and disappointed. For a racing game you don't have the chance to race very much. Evey car that you are behind will lift to let you past. EASports did seem to know that Frentzen and Alesi switched teams but the fact that Michael Schumacher is world Champion for the second time eludes them. In this game Michael is one of the worst divers on the grid and rarely ever scores a single point. There is no car set up option in normal mode. There is only a (labour intensive)car set-up in the simulation mode. I went back to F1 2000. Don't waste your money.

Yes it looks good and it sounds good and there is a great sense of speed, but yet another half-baked effort by EA, thrown on the market too soon (to justify the expensive season licence, I suppose).
This game is so crippled by bugs that most of its favourable aspects fade away facing the problems. The biggest problems occur around the actual racing. First off there are unrealistic qualifying rosters (4 times World champion Schumacher on 12th? a no-name like Heidfeld on pole?), ALL cars have the same performance parameters (so you can pole in a Minardi!?). The opponent AI ... big time: they are VERY fast in corners but extremely slow on straights (on which you can catch about 5 of them at once). On shorter races opponent cars NEVER pit when it starts raining (and it rains about 3 times in a 16 lap race), plus you are constantly yellow-flagged and penalized when you only put your wheel slightly off track.
Add to that other minor things, like not being able to save car setups, not being able to save game stages (only race weekends), no opponent cars on the tracks during practice, all cars have the same sound, weird and sticky car handling when releasing the throttle, most of the tracks beeing way too narrow compared to their real life counterparts, a pit radio that keeps giving you wrong and useless information, and an overall very hectic gameplay that never gives you the feeling that you are in control -- and you got a no winner.
Sure, that reflection in Montoya's helmet is awesome, but what good for if it doesn't feel like him. If you are satisfied with eye candy and the occasional lap around Monaco by yourself, then this title is for you. It looks great and it gives you a sense of speed. However, if you are a little more into F1 racing and want to get a feel for the whole thing i recommend 989s Formula One, which looks and sounds inferior but offers a much richer gameplay.
Stop, wait for 2002

First of all, I would like to tell you that I have been using Formula One racing games for many years and I'm also an avid F1 fan. Before buying this game I used to play on my PC Infrogame's Grand Prix 3.GP3 is real, fun, and great looking with the best game play I have experienced. I decided to give my PC a break and bought a PS2 so I could use my PC only for work matters.I wanted to keep on "racing" so I bought EA's F1 2001. Now let me tell you what I found, EA's Formula One 2001 is totally a let down for any real F1 fan. The game play is horrible. The car feels to sensitive to drive with the PS2 controls so keeping the car on track is as impossible as a Minardi winning a race this season. Another let down for this game is the physics engine. It is really funny the way cars "fly" after being involved in crashes, it just does not look or feel real. I give it two stars only because of its nice graphic detail and pit action.
I just wish EA Sports and Infrogames would join forces to make the perfect F1 game, because at the moment we only have to settle for this lame excuse for a Formula One simulation. Meanwhile, I keep on "racing" on my PC using an 2002 updated version of the greatest F1 game ever, Grand Prix 3.

If you are expecting the driving physics of GT3, you are up for a big disappointment.
If you are a F1 fanatic itching for something decent after months of waiting, then it could be worth your money... as long as you stick to dry races. Cars are impossible to control in the wet. Other negatives: weather changes every couple of laps, opponents don't change tires, pit sends wrong messages on your radio, etc.
A big disappointment

For those of us who expected a big improvement from EAsports..this is disappointing.First of all there are no rear view mirrors on the screen.Even 1998 season based PC games had this and much more features.
Another thing is racing in the wet is next to impossible and boring.I dont know how this game is getting great reviews..maybe some staff of easports are doing it(they also seem to be slamming 989sports f1 2001).
Graphics is very good but when will easports realise that graphics is not everything.
And in medium level of difficulty u can take pole easily since we can take the corners through the gravel without any loss of speed..dont know abt professional level.
My advice is not to bother buying this game..its not worth the money unless ur a montoyo fan.

i was hoping this game would be better than it was , i have played f1 games on the psx-1 that were better, maybe they did not look as good , but the car physics were a lot better, the gran prix cars on gran turismo 3 make these cars look bad, i hope EA sports do a better job on the next f1 game they produce, i took a chance on this game and i am dissapointed,

The game is a huge improvemnet over last years half baked effort. It's not perfect (yet) but it is by far the best one on the market. The AI could be better and the handling a litte more realistic. Normal mode being too easy, and Simulation a bit on the difficult side. Normal mode has no setup options and Sim mode almost too many. Graphics are great with track layouts and attention to detail superb. If nothing else it puts us one step closer to a truly great game next year.....assuming they fix the few short comings of this one. If you love Formula 1, have a go. You won't be dissapointed

I must admit I have not tried any of the other F1 games for PS2, so I can't compare. However, I found this particular title near perfect for what it is. Most F1 fans would likely disapprove of the extra challenge modes as they don't really figure into the scheme of racing for the championship. They are more like practice sessions with competitors and goals like teammate challenge where you finish in a position ahead of your teammate. For those of us who are not experienced F1 players to start with, this allows us to break into racing without having to slug it out for untold seasons without seeing any wins. Patience and practice is key to getting anywhere in championship or single race for that matter as the controls without a wheel is a bit wicked at first, but not impossible to learn. If you take the corners slow and memorize and anticipate the course and know how to turn into a corner and stay on the pavement, you will notice your laptimes will steadily drop.
I really like the flexibility in the rules and the way the game is played allowing for automatic transmission and many other assists as well as settings for automatic or interative pitstops. With so many options, one can pick up a skill at a time until you master racing in the game's purest form. Graphics are very nice. If you drive as Montoya in the car camera mode, it's tough to keep your eyes on the track as the reflections from his helmet are worth more than a glance. Sound seems to be good and the A.I. is quite fast. One problem I do experience is the way some of the competitors drive. Occasionally I will see a car ahead of me take on an erratic line or hit the breaks on an open stretch without anyone else nearby. I assume he must be trying to block my advance or the A.I. is confused. I'm not sure which, but it has caused some unnecessary disasters that can be annoying to have happen without warning. Luckily it doesn't happen often and the competitors do fan out pretty evenly.
F1 needs a serious upgrade to the current schedule of venues, drivers, and car design. Until that time, this is as good as a substitute as any.

The improvements over last year's game are remarkable. One gets more of a feel for the accleration and deceleration that formula one cars are famous for. The detail of both the cars and the tracks are astounding. I thought that in F1 Championship season 2000 all the tracks looked flat. One couldn't get a feel for the ups and downs of some of the inclines and declines that are such a prominent feature to some real F1 tracks. That has changed in this year's game. In particular, going down and then up into au rouge in F1 2001 is a lot of fun. In addition to graphics and game play there are some new multiplayer modes and a challenge mode which allows one to be graded on their driving skills in any and all conditions, for example, taking the chicane at Interlagos in wet weather on dry tires. A true F1 fan will enjoy how recent the game information is (i.e. Alesi is in a Jordan and Frentzen in a Prost), but any fan of driving simulations will find this game fascinating.
