The object of this game is to race through busy streets, driving as recklessly as you can. The more dangerous the driving (near-misses, driving on the wrong side of the road, skidding..etc.), the more your Turbo builds up. Once you get Full turbo, you can get up to speeds over 160 mph. But if you crash, your Turbo goes all the way down. You race against three other CPU (Computer Controlled) players, the first to the finish line wins. Usually there are 3 laps.
You can choose from 5 or so different cars and colors before you start racing.
The cars are a truck, a Viper-like sports car, a Ford Focus-like compact car, a Mitsubishi-like Sports car, and a Mecedes-like Luxury Car. you can unlock other cars by winning races.
This was a pretty good game, it has some pretty awesome wrecks in it. And when you crash it automatically shows it again in slow motion (that can be a good or bad thing).
I give the crashes a 4.5/5 the graphics a 4/5 and the replay value a 2/5
It's fun to play at first, but once you lose interest in it, you usually won't want to play it very much.....
TWO WORDS.....DONT BUY!

I BOUGHT THIS GAME AND RETURNED IT AN HOUR LATER. THE BOX MAKES YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR GETTIN THE MOST REALISTIC CRASHING GAME EVER MADE....BUT IN FACT ITS THE WORST..IF YOU WANT REALISTIC CRASHING GO BUY GRAND THEFT AUTO 3.ITS 10 TIMES BETTER. BASICALLY BURNOUT IS JUST ANOTHER RACING CLONE. NOT EVEN WORTH RENTING..NOT SURE WHY PEOPLE ON HERE GIVE IT 5 STARS.THEY PROBABLY NEVER PLAYED A RACING GAME IN THIER LIFE AND IT WAS THIER 1ST EXPERIENCE. SAVE YOUR MONEY IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY. LAYTA

I like racing games, but this is probably the worst racing game I have ever played. First you cant wreck and keep on going. It stops and shows you a bunch of (***). Also it charges you a hundred thousand dollars for a dent in your car. You also cant go fast I had a viper and I maxed out at 130 mph. And another thing there are these big green arrows that show you which way to go. You cant go in reverse or a big red wall comes out from nowhere and stops you. If you like not wrecking, driving slow, and spending money than this game is perfect for you.
Definetly not worth buying

RENT THIS GAME BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER BUYING IT!! This game is ridiculously lacking. The graphics leave MUCH to be desired. This looks more like a PSone game than a PS2 game. The crashes aren't as glamorous as people say they are; in a light front collision, all of the windows instantly crack, after a hard collision, all of the windows break and fall out, revealing the cars' incredibly detailed (sarcasm =P) pitch black interior. Once in a while you get a nice crash but its quite rare... (flips and such). Most of the crashes are spinouts, rear end collisions, and head on collisions. Oncoming traffic is so ridiculously blurry, you dont see it until its practically in your face. At intersections, there are arrows preventing you from going off course, and from behind these arrows comes cross-traffic (usually conveniently placed 18-wheelers) that is nearly impossible to see. There is NO HANDBRAKE. The tracks are OK, but tacky and repetitive. The music is the most generic stereotypical techno music I have ever heard (with the exception of the intro tune, its kinda nice). The opponent cars dont ever crash or slow down until theyre on your screen, so basically theyre always close behind. Even if you somehow manage to lose them, even one crash will magically bring them right on your tail, and they usually pass you while you try to accelerate. The crashes aren't really fun considering you lose 'burnout' (boost) because of them, and they take off a lot of time while it replays the crash three times over. The racing has its own feel to it... it might be fun, but not for long...
i broke my controller i got so mad at this game

at first you're like"wow look at that crash that was awsome",and you drive into oncoming traffic nearly hitting almost every car. but then you find out how annoying this game is.the only fun level is the first one. every time you crash you lose five seconds from your already rediculuosly low amount of time to get to the next check point and once you lose every race because you crashed twice and couldn't make it to the next check point in time you will find your self saying "why the heck did i waste 50 bucks on this?!" acclaim had a good game but put to much focus on the racing aspect of it. if you want a good racing game get grand turismo three and if you wanna destroy cars get twisted metal:black or twisted metal:black online(won't be out for about 3-4 months but has more features than tm:black) all this game is good for is annoying you
Doesn't measure up to other racers.

Burnout is definitely not worth buying. Even a rental isn't quite warranted. Actually, the best way to experience Burnout is to stop by a friend's house when he's rented (or bought) it. If you drive just one lap of a race, you get the idea. There's really not that much more to get out of it. With games increasingly being measured by the hours of original play that they offer, this is really quite pathetic.
The idea is appealing to anyone who lives in a metropolitan area and has to hassle with traffic--just plow through the congestion and buzz on. However, the execution of the game is so half-arsed that even young children will lose interest after a few heats. Get more points by sliding around corners? Who cares? Drive head-on into traffic to get a bonus speed burst? Even this is dull in Burnout. The replays are very choppy, as well; the pavement looks about as believable as it would if you were to try to pass a glass of milk off as the Statue of Liberty.
It seems that the next ingenious move by some bright developer is going to involve melding the possibilities of this game with the spot-on craftsmanship of the Gran Turismo series. Let's invoke crashes on the highway at 150 mph...let's see some damage on the cars where it happens...let's have a suped-up racing engine that tears through the suburbs and plows down small families...Wheeeee! Unfortunately, Grand Theft Auto 3 has already done this, so don't get all in to a tither like you do.
If someone wants to make just a racer interesting for me after something as satisfying as GTA 3, though, they're going to have to do better than Burnout. Pity your friend and his (expensive) mistake after your obligatory lap--and save your money. (...)
WATCH OUT... TOO LATE!

This game is pretty cool! It's an arcade style racer that is true to its form! This is a cool game because of the crashes and high speed action, of course if you are a die hard GT3 fan (like myself) don't go into this game thinking it's a really cool simulator cause its definitely not! You get about 2 cars to pick from on each level (easy, medium, hard) to race on 3 different tracks. You get that 40-second clock to get to the checkpoint and to finish a race you have to make it around three times. Let me tell you these laps aren't short; a 3 lap race (assuming you beat the clock and actually finish) takes about 9 minutes on the game clock!
They give you a price tag for the amount of damage you do per crash, I thought that was cool, and a worst drivers list, which you get put on if you have enough crashes!
Over all it's a fun game, the crashes are fun, weaving through traffic at 130mph is just crazy but for you GT3 fans out there this game will get old after about a half an hour! Rent it first!

I would like to purchase this game but the price is too damn high. I mean it came out in 2001 and its still $69 dollars. That dosent make sense. On Amazon.com it is there for $20 bucks American. Too bad they dont ship thier video games to canada. Anyway back to Amazon.ca. The gamecube version is only $26 bucks. They better start getting their prices looked at or theve lost a customer.
