This is probably the best first person shooter to come out for ps2. I like this better then both halos. Its fun, scary, challenging, and crazy cool. And o yea did i mention the graphics they are very nice, and are much better then halos graphics. I wouldnt reccomend this for little kids though, it has tons of curses and is very gory one guy gets his head ripped off and they show it. Overall i think it is an amazing game if your thinking about getting it GET IT.

Decent but not great

Title basically said it all. This is a game that's worth buying if you can find it for $20 - $30 or better yet cheaper but it's not worth $50. My main flaw with this is that it was too easy.

Worthy Sequel

Area 51 was first released as an light-gun arcade machine in the 90's. It followed the theory that Area 51 in Nevada was actually holding aliens. You played a marine trying to reclaim the base while learning deadly secrets. The story in this installment remains the same with more depth. You play as Ethan Cole, a marine sent in to find out what happened to Hazmat team Delta who disappeared while investigating the base. When you first arrive, you'll notice that things are totally messed up as you kill a comrade who's seem to have gone mad.

This game has a storyline that has many twists and turns. While the game has been changed from a light gun game to a FPS it still retains that of an arcade shooter. Enemies will pour into a room and you and your team mates must get rid of them to go on. However, they have added mission objectives to this game. You also get a couple of familiar actors like X-File's David Duchovny as Specialist Cole and creepy Marilyn Manson as Edgar the bizarre alien who contacts you throughout the game.

Overall, this game feels a lot like Halo in a good way. But there's a lot more here than in Halo. First, you get the choice (later in the game) to be a human player or alien. As a human you use various weapons like hand guns, automatic weapons, and the occasional alien arsenal. But it's fun to play as an alien too because you have the option to shoot parasites at various enemies which will refill your health. There's a catch though, you have to keep the Mutagen bar up to shoot parasites and it can be refilled by hitting enemies with your claws.

The game is pretty linear and can be easily completed but Midway added a few things to make it a little longer. First, we've got a scanner in this game that we use to scan special databank items. These items are amusing to read as they make you question whether this really happened or not. They can unlock special videos that fill in holes that plague you in the campaign mode. One of my favorites is Dr. Cray's video diary where he says that they faked the moon landing (which you can actually see in the base) to cover up what they found there. That has been a big controversy ever since it happened in the 60's.

The only disappointment I had in this game is that it can be completed easily and the fact that you can't unlock the original game (but you can find the actual arcade box located in some of the levels if you look carefully). You should pick this one up for some laughs with the documents or if you liked the original or any FPS games. Don't pick this up if you don't like arcade shooters though.

Pros
- Interesting Storyline
- Funny Documents that show how the government could've hidden things from the public
- The ability to play as either human or alien in campaign mode
- The multiplayer modes are interestingly put together
- We get good voice actors like David Duchovny
- We get to infiltrate one of the coolest, secret places on earth
- The inclusion of the original Area 51 arcade machine in the base

Cons
- No original game is unlockable
- The game is rather short if you decide not to pick up database items

Honestly one of the best games I have played.

I must say I was very impressed with this game. I didn't really expect it to be all that great when I first got it. I simply got it to play online because of what I had read from customer reviews. It was the complete opposite of what I expected it to be.

The graphics are fantastic and the cinematics, although very short, are breath taking. The environments are the best I have ever seen in any game. On a scale of 1-10 for creativity in the environment, characters, visuals, weapons, color scheme, graphics, etc. etc. I would give it an 11 no doubt about it. It deserves more than a perfect score, thats how great I felt it was in those aspects. I have not yet seen a game that comes close.

Don't listen to the reviews that claim the single player mode to be dull, boring, short and/or easy. I can assure you it is none of those. I was one of the fools that believed those reviews from people who aparently probably didn't even play the game and my expectations for the single player mode were very low. I was in for quite a surprise. The single player mode is much longer than a majority of other similar games even when on easy mode. Some points though, can become frustrating to beat (well atleast in my case).

I honestly cannot find any legitimate negative aspect of the game. This is a very solid game all around.

I am not a big first person shooter fan and I never have been but this game has changed all that. I would definatly recommend this game to anyone who is even remotely interested. If you arent sure whether to believe my judgement then go ahead rent it first and you will see what I am talking about. It is to ps2 what Halo was to XBox.

This Game ROCKS.....

(I am C Jones - this review written by PLUG, my grandson - "This game is really a good one. The players are awesome. I am at the GRAYS level and it is an exciting game. I am also interested in other games like this, and books. I love books on the TITANIC and Roswell, for I had an Uncle Phil who was associated with the space program and knew Werner von Braun. He never claimed to have seen a UFO but my grand mother said no doubt he rode on them. for he was the GREAT THOR CHIEF. I am visiting Roswell with my Godmother soon. Thanks for a great game. My Name Is: PLUG" I am his Grandmother and I approve this message. (after little editing)

With the constant upgrading of platforms, consoles, game systems, etc.,I must admit I'm trailing a little behind-- as I still faithfully play on the PS2. And with a diminishing variety of games to choose from, this was a great discovery! I remember it was $50.00 when it debuted in 2005, I just picked it up for twenty bucks! I guess you could call me the casual gamer, but this game is great, and I'd put it pretty close to the classics like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. (Pretty Close)

One thing I've got to hand to Midway...they did an awesome job at bringing Area 51 back into the shooter fold the way it should be. I was greatly impressed with the way this game looked and played on the Playstation2. I've played a ton of FPS in my time but I've never had one to just draw me in from the moment it started like this one did. It had a certain eerie style to it that kept me playing to see what happend next. I'll admit, at first, I thought it was just your normal typical FPS(and in many ways, it is) but with an intriguing storyline-great voiceovers by Powers Boothe, Marilyn Manson and David Duchovny-and dead-on gameplay...it's anything but. It's one of the better FPS released of late on the PS2. I hope Midway decides to keep this series going cause I, absolutely, loved this game.

The story to the game goes a lil something like this...The research facility at Area-51 has been shut down because of a viral outbreak. The distress signal received by the U.S. Army has activated the automatic quarantine procedures, locking all scientific and military personnel inside. It will be your mission, as Ethan Cole, to dive into five massive levels within the secret confines of the mysterious Area-51 to try to keep the virus contained.

Good, but could be better

In search of a FPS for PS2, I picked this game up. I am not dissapointed by the game with a solid story mode [yet short] or detailed graphics. Halo [for Xbox] this game is not. But, its a similar game lacking in gun variety however.
'Area 51' really thrives in the online mode with games always going on, allowing you to stop and go whenever you please with up to 15 other players nationwide in many different levels.
Overall, a good single player game, a weak multiplayer mode [it could have had co-op], but a great online mode.

better than i thought

Area-51 is my favorite game. I like blowing the aliens heads off. I like how you can turn into human and mutant. All my teammates died an is so hard to beat. Crispy is the funny man that turns to mutant and you have to kill him, I beat the game It was easy on easy but I didn't beat it on medium and I almost beat it with help.
