I don't get the appeal of the Wipeout games. They're terrible. Wipeout 3 and XL are no different. The music is good enough (for a bunch of techno beats... yeah, I'm not a techno fan) and the graphics are slick and futuristic-looking, but the actual racing part has one BIG problem: you keep hitting the side of the track as you go around a turn and for some reason that means you have to make a complete stop. It wouldn't be so bad if you just slowed down, but the fact that your vehicle stops *immediately* is the worst thing ever.
How are you supposed to enjoy a racing game if you keep hitting the side of the track and STOPPING every couple seconds? There's so many turns in any one of the races, that the problem is unavoidable. I don't understand when people say you need skill to enjoy these racing games. If I can't increase speed, then what ELSE is there to enjoy? If the appeal lies in playing each race over and over so you can memorize the track to avoid hitting the side, then count me out. Doing that would be WAY too tedious of a task. You need a lot of space to freely drive around or else a racing game won't work.
Sure, I can go around shooting other vehicles, but who cares about that when I can't ever catch up to them. Too many sharp turns in the Wipeout series make it difficult to build up speed. Right when I think I've got a good race going, I hit the side and my car stops and there goes the momentum. What a way to kill the fun.
Buy if you want a slap of crap.

I can't play this game after playing Wipeout 3 - the latter blows the doors off of it. Don't get me wrong, Wipeout XL is a good game, but compared to Wipeout 3 the graphics are muddy and kind of ugly and I hate all the in-game corporate advertising (which is all over the game). Save your money and buy Wipeout 3.

The second in the wipeout series, and it lives up to the previous version. With more tracks, better graphics, more weapons, and tons of secrets it is a must have for anyones game collection. Watch as a few minutes of game play turn to hours.
A fan favorite

Wipeout XL - Circa 1998
GOOD:
- A better version of a great and original game
- Good/Tight controls
- Really good techno soundtrack
BAD:
- To todays gamer these graphics look dated, but at the time they looked state of the art
- Gameplay is not as fluid when compared to today's racing games
- If you hate futuristic racing, techno, or racing while shooting games
WILL IT FIT YOUR TASTE:
- A futuristic racing game, with hovering cars
- Cars can shoot at each other
- Techno soundtrack
GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Wipeout
- Wipeout 2
- Mario Cart 64 (for the driving and shooting bit)
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- All the music is from real and somewhat known American/British techno bands
- This game is basically a remake of Wipeout, with more unlockable
- There is a version of this game for the P.C.

Computer games have come a long way since Atari, and WipeoutXL proves it. Conceptually, this is the coolest, most creative game I've ever seen. The whole "anti-gravity" racing scenario is the greatest idea I've seen for a game in a long time. The graphics are great, and the game itself is sheer FUN. The soundtrack is full of great electronic tunes...very fitting. This is the only video game I've ever played that actually put chills up my spine. If it does that, then it must be good.

I consider the original Wipeout for Sony Playstation to be the finest fururitic racer ever (yes, I like it better than any incarnation of F-Zero). From the gorgeous visuals and multiple lighting scenes for every level (Vemom and Rapter Classes), to the awesome, awesome, AWESOME soundtrack (my favorite soundtrack of any racing ever), Wipeout was perfect. But many people don't agree with me. They prefer Wipeout's sequel, Wipeout XL. It's easy to see why.
Wipeout XL takes what everyone loved about the original and upped it a notch. The graphics are higher Resolution, the music is more upbeat, the weapons are more lethal. But perhaps the greatest reason to play it is that it's REALY FAST. There is simply no experience on earth like playing Wipeout XL on Phantom Class (the fastest class) with the hidden class of ship (unforetunately it loses weapons in exchange for maxed-out stats).
When you play this game in this configuration, it truly is sublime. Weapons are fired at you, but you outrun them. You're bouncing off the wall like crazy, but going so fast it feels like you've got the speed burst weapon on continuous fire. It's easy to see what makes this game so great. It's a great concept executed flawlessly. You have great art direction, great controls, great gameplay, and great music. At a pace so fast it should carry a warning label.
If you love racing games, and especially if you love Wipeout, you'll HAVE to buy this game.
Can you handle it?

Soon as I heard Prodigy's Firestarter I knew it was on. This game is fast, real fast. Wipeout XL may not be in high res like Wipeout 3 but it's got the best gameplay, courses, and music of the series. The control is not as tight as Wipeout 3 and the learning steep is alot better. It's easy at first, but get's harder, faster, and more fun the more you race. Unlock a special racing team and new courses if you can beat the challenge. Only complaints I have about this stellar game is no Dual Shock support, which means no analog or rumble feature, and not in high res. The graphics are still really great though.
Get the PC version for an even better treat.

This game is the reason why I bought a 3D accelerator card for my PC. Simply Amazing. The best game ever made by Psygnosis, too bad Wipeout 3 is only on the PlayStation. (Boo-hoo)
Excellent Game

There's been a lot both good and bad said about this game. When I first popped it in, this thing was slow. I said "how is this such a good game if it's slow"? Well, my question was answered. Win some races and the game gradually gets faster and faster and faster, and, well, faster. With all the mayhem going on around you slowing down isn't much of an option. Once you combine the speed with all the other special weapons available this is where the game starts to shine. When your palm starts to sweat. When you realize just how fast your heart can beat. Think that's an excessive description? You won't think so once you get a hold of this adrenaline rush!
