I bought this with eager anticipation and hopes of seeing something above and beyond the XL version. didn't really match my hopes, but still this is fun game, if you like the series its worth getting, but if you have to choose a good racer, get Wipeout XL first!
A Great Game!

Wipeout 3 or Wip3out, as you like, is the top of this series. Scenaries are superb, reallistic and impressive. You can play in three view modes (cockpit added), any of them results in awesome experiences. Smooth, simply smooth, is what better describe the sensations and feelings when playing. Venom, Vector, Rapier... Feisar, Auricom, Piranha... the name you want, the pleasure is total! I'm a GREAT fan of Wipeout 2 but, sure, it will remains in the jewel case after this release. No more popping, no more lost polygons, no more weird colours... no Red Bull at all! True 3D, speed, action, real weapons, all that you want in a FAST game. Chase the opponents in one of five play modes... Languages? No problem: english, german, portuguese, italian, french, spanish... Saying 'no significant improves' is too simply, silly almost, I promise! The soundtrack is lacking the atmosphere created by Photek, Fluke, Prodigy, Cold Storage or Chemical Brothers in WO2, but is Ok. Playing for a month will be a good way to agree with.
** IF YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME, PLAY WIPEOUT 3 **
Get 'em both

There's no question that it's basically the same game as WipeoutXL. However, it's been improved by the addition of support for regular analog controllers (as opposed to the NegCon, which never really caught on), improved frame rate and higher overall speed.
With some exceptions, WipeoutXL had more interesting music and cooler-looking vehicles (AG-Systems' racer looks great though). With some exceptions, Wipeout3's visual and sound effects have been improved (the plasma bolt just doesn't look as impressive as it should).
My only serious complaint about Wipeout3 is the limited number of tracks. From the start you only have access to four tracks. Presumably winning the gold with all 8 teams on all 4 tracks opens up another track, but I've been unable to accomplish this yet. Four tracks isn't nearly enough to play around with, and the difficulty jumps rather drastically from the 3rd track (where I can win the gold almost easily with any vehicle) to the fourth (where I've yet to place better than 3rd with any vehicle).
Still, both Wipeout3 and WipeoutXL are enjoyable, and I recommend them both highly.
As good as if not better than Wipeout XL

This game is really great and by far the best racing game available. The Wipeout series is known for its innovation and high-res graphics and Wipeout 3 doesn't fail to please.
The game has a ton of features like single race, challange, eliminator, and the prototype tracks. There are many multiplayer options and you can have up to 4 players with a link cable (2 w/o). The soundtrack is as good as XL, but I was a bit disappointed that there was no Cold Storage in it. On the downside of this game, the difficulty between vector and venom classes is too different. Vector is very easy and venom is hard, there's no medium. Once you get past that though this game is quirk free.
So buy W3 and try to find Wipeout XL (which is out of print).
The ultimate Wipeout?

This game is remarkable. It features music from some of the most popular techno gurus around and was mixed by one of the greatest-DJ Sasha. The (hi-res!)graphics feature innovative and stunning designs by Designers Republic, and run both mind-bendingly fast and smoothly, with little pop-up. Though the difficulty levels are a bit quirky (beating the first round of tracks on EASY is a breeze, but when you hit NORMAL you can barely place) the cars and secret tracks more than make up for the difficulty of the later modes. This version also has the much-sought after 2 player simultanous mode absent from the other games. Overall, this game IS NOT for realistic racing fans, but for the rest of us who enjoy great graphics, control (the analog stick on the dual-shock works great), and music in a fantasy racing situation, Wipeout 3 is almost perfect.
The best futuristic hovercraft racing game ever

This the third installment of Wipeout for the Playstation, and, along with Tony Hawk Pro Skater, compelling evidence that the ancient PSX platform still has some life left. Psygnosis continue to demonstrate their absolute mastery at extracting every drop of performance out of the long-outdated hardware. The Wipeout series has always featured incredible soundtracks, and the latest is no exception. The techno is more trance-oriented than in past excursions, but this may be just the thing for focusing your mind on the game's really hard levels.

Wipeout is one of the best racing games around. Incredibly fast speeds, great sound track, large variety of weapons, everything a good racing game should have.
If you are looking for a fast racing game then give it a try. But if you see Wipeout XL I would suggest you get it instead.
Give this game a chance, it's better than you think.

I purchased this game because I am a Wipeout fan. I enjoyed the first, the second was great, but my first reaction to the third was less than enthusiastic. I was looking for another XL. The soundtrack is just as good as XL if not better, especially song #14. The sound effects aren't as good and the weapons seems less impressive. BUT, after I played this game more and more I began to enjoy it. The tracks are much smoother than any other Wipeout game and some of the extra features really have some cool things to do. I listen to the music all the time, and I am still trying to master the rapier class tracks. Enjoy this game, if you have the heart for it and the speed in your fingers, you will like it. Overall, a great sequel. Can't wait to see what PS2 will provide.
Not much on improvement, but still a great game

Wipeout 3 may not be much of an improvement over Wipeout XL, but even the tinniest improvement over an amazing game that XL was makes a game incredible. True, XL may look more colorful if you compare it to Wipeout3, but the third installment reeks with new hovercraft, new amazing tracks, and small details that XL was missing such a doves in the middle a racetrack. Also is a plus is the new soundtrack. The best compilations of techno music in the Wipeout series thus far, I'm serious.
