A fun game, but most of the fun is the enthusiasm.

If you grew up watching cartoons in the 80s, it's likely that you dreamed of flying a veritech with Max Sterling and Rick Hunter, or had a crush on the beautiful Lynn Minmei. Well, it's now 2003, and you can live out at least some of these childhood fantasies with the new PS2 game, Robotech: Battlecry from TDK.

The game is basically a souped-up 3rd person shooter like Tomb Raider or MDK. You get to pilot a veritech craft, a transformer robot based on the F-14 Tomcat. You fly in veritech (plane) mode, battloid (50-foot killer robot) mode, or the agile guardian (hovering airplane with legs) mode. Those familiar with the Macross and Robotech series will find most of their dreams fulfilled. Those who have outgrown some of the Robotech lustre may find the game a bit of a disappointment.

First, the pluses. The gameplay is straightforward and easy to get the hang of. Most missions can be solved in one mode, so the need for transformations and mastery of complex tactics is dependent on the player, not the game. The graphics are directly out of the cartoon: bright and contrasting colors, with an anime feel. This is a very fun aspect of the game. The sound effects and music are top notch, and right out of the cartoon, down to the pounding of the battloid's feet on the pavement of Macross city. Weapons and action are of good quality, with a full range of movement in most modes and most missions. The plot is engaging if simplistic, and the cutscenes are fun to watch.

Now for the minuses. The major drawback in this game is the absence of a coherent enemy AI except in the boss levels. Most battle pods and fighters keep coming at you, seldom find cover, and so far as I can tell never cooperate with each other. The exceptional units are the male power armor and the missile pods, which are fantastically well armored and armed, respectively. Still, little tactical acumen is required on most missions: point and shoot, and keep shooting til your gun overheats or you're out of missiles.

The second problem is the 3d effects. First the cockpit radar. Friendly forces are blue dots on a blue background, and against the enemies the radar is only useful in azimuth, not elevation. With complex gun and missile targeting, a nicer more usable radar would have been an obvious addition. Second, in Battloid mode you cannot see straight up or straight down, though you will find yourself shooting in these directions. Finally, many missions have altitude caps: if you transform to veritech mode and go for altitude, you hit the ceiling, convert to battloid, and fall back down. I guess they don't want you running up to 2 or 3000 feet and just using missiles on everyone (energy tactics); such tactics would make the already simple task of killing battle pods too simple. Cartoonishly simple.

Overall, the game is very much like MDK: slaughter a bunch of mindless robots with your machine gun, defeat the mighty boss, and advance to the next level. Nostalgia for the series should not blind you to the limitations within the game. I love being able to fight along side Rick Hunter (though he doesn't seem interested in fighting along side me!), and to carry Minmei to her concert appearance after Dolza's attack. ...

Great for old and new fans.

This was a great game. I do agree with soem oth the other reviews that the AI in this game suffers but it is made up for in the sometimes almost overwelming number of Enemy units that get thrown at you Mission after mission. It becomes almost a nightmare trying to keep up with the number of units on the screen. But just like in the old Robotech days, you shifts moods, switch weapons and let loose. The anamation is increadble and the game play is fun. Any Robotech fan would love this game, and some new fans will learn the joy of Robotech.

very good....

this game is everything i wanted and more. even though you cant play as the people in the show it is very good and has the right amount of dificulty to make it intresting. but the games replay vallue is low( for me ). that is probably why is is long. it has a huge amount of missions and diferent bots to soot the mision youare on.

This is one game that actually exceeds my expectations!

I'm a huge Robotech fan, I've loved Robotech since it first aired on American TV back in '84 or '85. This game is long overdue for die hard Robotech fans. The game play can be a bit challenging at times, which for me keeps it interesting. There are also a wide variety of enemies and different veritechs you can unlock. The models are rendered perfectly and the scenery is fantastic. You can tell the programmers put a lot of time into doing this one right.

Even if you aren't familar with Robotech, it's still a great game.

If you're a Robotech Fan... This game is a must have

I wait a long time for for this title, 'cause I'am a Robotech Fan, I saw a couple of titles of this excelent anime on Dreamcast and another console... but this game rocks....

Pros
- Best Game for the Robotech Saga
- Graphics like the anime...(Really Cool)
- Controls are easy to use
- Good Line Story
- Weapons... Missile launcher really cool!!!

Cons..
- Wheres is Rick Hunter...
- Becareful..in some missions the constantly transformations is fundamental to succeed.
- Some missions are to long... and with 3 or 4 objectives... and if you accomplish 3 or 2 but your die accomplishing the last objective.... you must star all over the mission.
- Very few maps on VS mode.(You start only with one map... and during the game you unlock more maps)

If you are like me, and grew up as a loyal fan of Robotech, and always wanted to be a pilot of the veritechs that Rick flew, then you have to get this game. Great cel shading graphics and constant action in all directions. I highly advise getting this game. "RTF Forever!!!"

Pros and Cons of the First Robotech Game

Ok I know many out there what the guts of a review spelled out in plain english so here goes;

Pros: If you are a robotech fan you will love this game. You are able to use all functions for the veritech (battliod, guardian, and fighter) no matter what map you are on. Graphics and the feeling of finally getting to fly a Veritech make it a must for any robotech fan. You get to even fly missions with Rick hunter and Roy Folker. All the main characters in the Macross saga make some showing, although their voices sound like they are 20 years older (which they are). Fighting terrain includes space, cities, and sky of earth. You can even fight one on one with a friend to test your skills on a human opponent.

Cons: Voices of your character in the game (Jack) and other becoming annoying quickly. Versus mode limits you to Veritech and if you were hoping to climb into a officer pod or a zentradi jet you are out of luck. City buildings look cheesy. Map boundaries limit you from going over many buildings when in a city map. If this game was a little more expanded in a few option areas it would get 5 stars. Nonetheless a great game for the first Robotech crossover.

It's about time!

Robotech Battlecry does justice to the show. The cartoon was great and so is this game. Playing as a pilot in the Wolf squad instead of being one of the main show characters was a nice touch. The game follows the story well and eventually goes off into its' own senario. You also meet some familiar faces here and there.

The gameplay is what makes this game stand out. You have three modes to operate and each serves a different function. Used strategically switching between each function will turn a player into a piloting genious. The atmosphere is all Robotech. Missles and gun fire light up the screen beautifully. The mix of earth and space missions keep the game from becoming to dry. The game is a mixed bag on the challenge though. Some stages are easy enough but others are so tough that when thought you were an ace will humble you very quickly. One particular boss will not let up for a second.

My only gripe about this game are the ground level earth stages and the physics used in the space stages. For the earth stages there is a boundry once you fly up to a certain point. In the heat of battle taking to the sky would be a good way to get away and regroup for you and/or the enemy and whoever is left on the ground will have to give chase. Now the other problem. Sense when is there an upright in space? Maybe I'm being picky, but your plane always returns in a upright position. There is no gravity, there is no atmosphere your plane should follow suite with space physics. Hopefully if there is a sequal and if it doesn't move to the next chapter of the series those two minor problems can be addressed. Until then GOOD HUNTING.

This is a very well done Game. The music and graphics make one feel like they are watching the show. The only down side is that I wish it were easier to turn around, but with practice, switching to robot mode, re-orienting your position, and then swiching back to jet or guardian works well. Or if you need to turn 180 degrees in your flight path using the half loop or split-S flying in jet mode is just as good. It is really fun!

I think this game is pretty good. The missions are challanging and the controls are great. I really like the graphics. I got my robotech battle cry game for 39.99 at target and in the package there was a free dvd. it was the first episode of robotech the cartoon. I bought mine at the store though.
