I should have learned from my previous experience of NCAA Basketball 2K5 to avoid this company's games like the plague. Chock full of 'innovative' controls, the timing mechanisms involved in basic gameplay frustrate every aspect of this game. The graphics are horrible. Why not save money on the license and create your own generic players? And did anyone bother to game-test this? The cut-away scenes are horrible. You will see your pitcher run off the mound to end an inning, the camera will zoom in, then zoom out again to show him standing on the mound to walk off.
Do you like to pitch? The ball control works great...unless there is a runner on base which will almost always cause your pitcher to throw a wild pitch. The is especially frustrating when you try to avoid it by throwing a meatball down the middle of the plate and it flies over the catcher's head. I wish I was exaggerating, but in playing against my girlfriend 24 wild pitches led to 13 runs between the two of us.
Do you like to field? You'll certainly enjoy your left fielder throwing out runners sidearm from the hip. Or how about the your catcher jogging lazily to get a passed ball then running back to try and tag out a runner by himself? What about trying to run to the ball with one player to find out control has been switched to another?
Or maybe you like hitting. Personally, I find the analog stick control tedious. You will miss on a lot of swings if you try to put any power behind it. And god forbid you try to hit it in the outfield. My favorite part is how the 1st base runners will almost always overrun 1st base instead of rounding the base.
I could care less about the Franchise or Manager features of this game. I just want a game I can stick in and play easily. I am sorry I didn't listen to my better judgement and go for the other MLB offering. I would have gotten a free hat. Now, I am out at least $15 bucks if I trade it in...but I would trade it in even if all I got in return was a Happy Meal toy. This game is horrible. Avoid it like the plague!

This game is awful. I rarely write reviews, but when something blows this bad I'm left with no choice. Most people have the same complaint; the pitching is the worst ever and the fielding leaves a lot to be desired. If you want to buy a baseball game, don't buy this one.
Rent before you buy...PLEASE!!!

I have one word for this game...PATHETIC! The graphics are made for a PS1 not a PS2. The players look deformed. Did they even bother capturing player motion at all? There is a horrible lack of replay camera angles. They show a guy striking out with a portion of his head and I think you can see an elbow. When they show a replay of a homerun, the guy's swing is extremely overdone. He swings and is almost looking behind him at followthru. Is he looking at the fans behind the plate or the ball leaving the yard? Well, he should be looking at the ball I would think. The only thing halfway decent in this game is the fielding. It seems to be solid and fluid. I couldn't even finish one game because I was so horrified at what I was seeing on screen. All I can say is thank God I kept MVP 2005 because nothing seems to come close. The makers of this game need to take a long look at the recent competition and figure out what they are going to do to fix it. It is nothing but second rate garbage and they should consider firing themselves before bringing out another game like this. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU ARE EITHER BLIND OR A COMPLETE MORON!!!

I had the same problem as everyone else who said that their pitcher would throw a wild pitch whenever a runner got on. I found the trick. I have a gc so it might not be the same as other consoles. All you have to do is hold the L button for at least 2 or 3 seconds before the pitch and then pitch like normal. If its not the L button then look in the games manuel under controls and see what the "Hold for Pickoff" button is. I swear to god it will work and save your life in this game.

I bought mbl:the show and 2k6, figuring I would compare the two and keep the better one. While "the show" isn't perfect, it will be the one I'm keeping. 2k6 is awful. The announcers are not at all relevant, and the gameplay is horrid. I had two straight games where in the 9th inning, with a one run lead, a shallow fly ball was hit. As I am standing under it, another outfielder comes running into the play. I press the "call off" button, butit doesn't matter. Ball drops on the ground, my guy can't pick it up once he gets to it, inside the park home run, game over. The second time this happened to me, I pulled the game out and put it on Ebay. Right now it's $.99 and if it sells for that, I would still be getting a bargain. If you want baseball, the best MLB action you can get is "the show" (unfortunately)... can't someone remake "baseball stars" for the old NES?
dont judge when you first play

im not going to lie but when i first got it i wanted so get my money back. but then i played it a little more and it got easier and funner.i didnt like the swinging thing intell i found out how to make homeruns u have to pull the analog stick back when they release the pitch. the fielding sometimes gets annoying with them taking there time whith the throw and then the person gets safe. the game lags on every game but it really only lags when someones going to catch a ball. but sometimes it lags on a pitch and it sucks if your the batter cause you might miss it. of corse this game has cheats you can unlock like hurricane weather or every strike out you get a point but i wouldnt waste my time on the cheats but u can unlock some old teams like nyy old team. with this game the only thing i would really do is season mode dont waste your time on the other ones theres no reason for them. there almost the same you just play games. the thing i got mad at is were is cardinals new stadium? and the lags and sometimes the infield. i like how you steal the bases.you have the computer either dont swing bun or swing while you can lead off and get ready to steal but dont lead of to far cause your most likley going to get picked off.thats it and GO CARDINALS
I will pay you NOT to buy this game

Well not really, I'm just trying to make a point on how much this game sucks. The 1st game I played I thought this game was great. That was until my outfielders just stood around the ball letting the opponents score runs. Why in the name of Zeus' [...] did EA sell the rights to this crappy franchise. I hate to say folks, but MVP NCAA is the baseball game to buy.
Not good....Really not good.

I agree with the other reviewers who have expressed disappointment after buying this game after MLB '06 the Show. If you have niether and you're gonna choose one, get The Show. NO DOUBT; HANDS DOWN.
2K6's graphics are lame; MVP '05 was way better. The game play is okay. Just okay. Hitting is less challenging than The Show at a similar skill level. The rosters are just horrible. It looks like they finished reseraching and settled on the rosters in December!
The only edge I'd give to 2K6 over The Show is the audio. This is also the only thing that I dislike about The Show. In 2K6, the commentators are ESPN's John Miller and Joe Morgan. The Show has three pretty lame homers. 2K6 did a really good job getting the audio to fit the context of the game. Not so for The Show.
Overall, though, 2K6 is really not much fun, and it doesn't look very good at all.
not bad, but rosters are horrible

the gameplay was fine, but the rosters were wrong. alot of the players that were included in mlb 06:the show were simply not in this game.kenji johjima and kevin millar are both in the show but not in 2k6.and i'm sick of games changing the names of players they can't use in the games.if you're not gonna put their real name and likeness, don't even include them in the game at all.2k6 had players on the rosters that got released or retired last year,or 2 years ago.overall, it was just a ok game.the show is alot better.and that's not saying much, because i only gave the show barely 4.
Looking like terrible at first, but now I give 5 stars

Those who complain about MLB 2K6 don't know how to play this game. At first, I had the same feelings with most of you and it looked very difficult to master the game, particularly in the controls for pitching and baserunning. I was about to return it back to store. But as I played more and more, I have learned how to make more accurate and wise pitches and how to do clever baserunning. It's just not difficult if you know how to play it, and it's a lot of fun to play online, which I am almost doing almost everyday now, and will be so for quite a while.
Now I feel this game is even better than MVP series from EA sports. I am not kidding. The gameplay is much better, and the controls are more comprehensive than other baseball games. I like the realistic depiction of players' collision on the field, and you can call off other players when catching a pop-up ball -- the first game I have seen having this feature. Jon Miller's commentary is just superb with a lot of variety, and his voice sounds cute. I very much like the BaseBurner feature in offline play. It would be nice if they had added this online also.
There is some downside to this game though:
1) Graphics is quite terrible on PS2, particularly the player faces. But I can live with this. I think the gameplay is the most important.
2) You have to switch the batting mode: swing stick vs classic control in online play in EVERY inning if your opponent is using the opposite batting mode to you. It's just troublesome and if you don't remember to do that, you would be screwed in the first few pitches of each inning.
3) For online play, there is a slight lag no matter how good your connection is. You have to accommodate that by swinging the bat slightly earlier than you would in offline play.
Overall, an excellent game that requires your patience to learn and enjoy.
