2001 is better

ugh. A new breed makes you qualify to race with cartoon jockeys, a cartoon horse mascot, and racing is A LOT more complicated. I love the 2001 gallop racer, I just don't think they improved on it at all, only complicated it more. What a shame. Rent it first before you buy it. Just my advice.

Gallop Racer 2003 ...

While I enjoyed Gallop Racer 2001 tremendously, GR 2003 is
a big step backward. The main problems are:
1. The graphics, while more detailed, is so dark and the
pixels for the track keep on changing color, perhaps to
simulate motion. GR 2001 has bright and sharp graphics
and the background does not make your dizzy like GR2003.
2. They make the start at the gate so difficult if the temper
of the horse is bad. The old way in GR2001 is more
reasonable.
3. They took away the overhead view so you can only have
first person view during racing. It is much harder.
4. Now you can bet on your own horse and it is so easy to
cheat. Just bet all your money and save until you win.
You will have a lot of money in no time.
Anyway, betting should not even be part of the game.

One good feature is the latent abilities. It makes horse
racing more exciting and unpreditable like real life.
If they just add that feature and improve the resolution
and animation of the horse, I will pay $50 to get the new
version right away.

Not a whole lot different from 2001!

Gallop Racer 2001 was one of the first games I owned for my PS2 and while it was enjoyable it also was insanely difficult (even on easy) and very frustrating. Now a difficult game is no reason for a bad rating but there was just so much lacking from the game like the class system. I won numerous G1 races with a Filly yet she was still rated lousy and there seemed to be a lack of goals. Well 2003 seemed like the developers really improved on the original PS2 copy. I read a short preview in a gaming magazine and one of the features they explained was that you no longer arerequired to physically ride in the races. I liked the idea of this since I was more interested in the setting up horses, training and breeding but this magazine was wrong. You do have to ridein the races. I find this frustrating and unrealistic of a horse racing sim. Here I am an employee working on a race horse farm but I don't know beans about riding a horse so in races I can have the best horse out there but make one small mistake and the race is over. So I would rather have a simulation mode for races. The game however added a few new touches like a university tutorial that grades your performance and yes higher marks help you in the game. here are also many other buildings which you can go to which add some needed depth to the game. Finally you can now bet on races in season mode and your winnings go to your cash total which is a plus. All in all I'd say Gallop Racer is a minor improvement over it's 2001 initial offering for the PS2. If you are a horse racing fan and want a simulation game for your PS2 well aside from importing a Japanese copy of G1 Jockey there are really no choices out there for you so you need to pick up this copy. However there are some better horse racing sims for the computer that are a tad more realistic.

A Great Game for those that are new to the Sport

This is a great horse racing game, especially if you are new to the sport, or are buying this game for a younger child. However, if you have ever been involved in horse racing, or read about it in depth, I would reccomend G1 Jockey 2003 as the better game for you. I have recently purchased both, and have found the G1 Jockey more entertaining to me, but that is probably because Horse-racing has become my life. However, I have a younger sister who hates the G1 Jockey because she doesn't understand Horse-racing very well, and is learning about the sport by playing Gallop Racer. I also believe she enjoys it more because she gets to own the horses, and breed them, instead of riding for different trainers on different peoples horses.

Graphic wise this is a good game, the only thing that is really missing from it is steeple chase races.

Vast Improvement over Gallop Racer 2001

Gallop Racer 2003 has many new enhancements over its predecessor. Actually, it a totally new game. The reward system is much better as you earn both money and points. Money can be used for betting or improving facilities. Points are used for acquiring horses. Breeding horses actually takes a year from mating until a foal is born. You now have more control over your foals success because you can train them before and after they begin racing. Winning a race requires more understanding of your horses abilities and race conditions, it's no longer merely a case of beating the horse to death with the whip down the stretch. Game negatives for me are the limits on the number of horses you can hold for stud/breeding, a limit of 6 active horses for racing, and the Hall of Fame. Overall, the game has repeat playability as there are many hidden and locked features.

Great Game you'll wanna try it

This game rocks! I just got it and I think it is a great game. It is not exactly like real racing, you own and race your horses. I has points and money. Money is used for betting and some other things. But points buy you your horses. It is pretty hard, even in Easy mode so don't be disapointed. You do win once in a while though. It has easy instructions and the system is user friendly. There are two modes. Season mode, where you start out with lowly horses and work your way up - and Free mode, where you can pick any horse and choose the weather, track, etc.All in all, I think this game is the best, even for adults. My dad plays too and he has a lot of fun. Hope this is helpful!

coooool!!
